Urban Rail has seen substantial growth in India in the recent years. More cities are experiencing the need for metro rail to meet their day-today mobility requirements. To keep this faster pace, for moving people, urban rail projects are playing a crucial role not only as a transportation solution but as a means to transform cities.
Currently, 642 km of metro lines are operational in different cities in the country. More than 600 km of metro rail projects are under construction in various cities. With a view to augment the sector in the country, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) issued the Metro Rail Policy in 2017 to ascertain and enhance the feasibility of metro rail projects from economic, social and environmental perspective focussing on systematic planning and implementation of, metro rail systems.
Realizing the potential of metro rail systems to transform the cities it is expected that the new Government of India will expand the coverage of metro to 50 cities. MoHUA recently proposed the development of Light Urban Rail Transit System named “Metrolite” for smaller cities with lower projection of transit ridership. Urban rail transit systems are therefore the most popular option of mass transport but it is important to highlight the viability of its operation and sustenance with innovation, digitalisation and integration.
UITP India is planning to conduct its annual event on Urban Rail “3rd UITP India Urban Rail Seminar” hosted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Scheduled on 18-19 December 2019, the event will witness representation from all metros in India, metro operators, ministries involved in Urban Rail landscape of India and other industry players
The seminar will try to address the following areas:
- Cases of efficient metro rail systems in Indian cities
- Moving towards alternate rail-based systemsMetrolite
- Metro rail automation
- Innovation, digitalization and artificial intelligence in metro rail systems
- Last mile connectivity
