Kolkata East-West Metro To Be Inaugurated Tomorrow

Kolkata: The East-West Metro is set to begin its services on February 13 from the Information Technolgy hub of Sector V in Salt Lake City to the Yuva Bharati Krirangan stadium, a Kolkata Metro official said. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is set to inaugurate the second metro line in the city.

  • The construction of the East West Metro, scheduled to cover a stretch of 16.6 kilometres, has been delayed owing to an aquifer burst at Bowbazar in central Kolkata in August 2019 during tunnel boring work.
  • A Metro spokesperson said that the inaugural service of East-West Metro will commence from February 13.
  • The truncated service of 5 km from Sector V to the stadium is likely to provide some relief to office goers and students of several educational institutes of the area.
  • The East-West Metro, connecting the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah, was scheduled to be completed by June 2021.
  • The city is presently served by a north-south metro line stretching from Dum Dum in the northern suburb to Garia in its southern outskirts.
  • Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRC) is the implementing agency of the 16.6 km East West metro project.
  • On its full stretch, the Metro would run from Salt Lake’s Sector V to Howrah Maidan.
  • Out of the total 16.60 km, 5.8 km is an elevated corridor and 10.8 km will run underground.
