QR code based ticket checking system developed by North Central Railway

In a major development, innovative QR code based ticket checking system developed by Prayagraj division of North Central Railway is being implemented on pan India basis for contactless reserved ticket checking. Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has rolled out an application covering all Zonal Railways to display reserved ticket details of passenger in form of unique QR code.

  • On successful reserved ticket booking from anywhere, a SMS containing URL of QR code will be sent to the passenger mobile number. 
  • During entering the station or checking of ticket, passenger will click on the QR code URL available in his/her SMS and the QR Code of the reserved ticket will be displayed on the passenger’s mobile browser.
  • Hand held terminal (HHT) with CRIS application shall be used for QR code scanning in contactless fashion and QR code scanning will automatically update the passenger turn up details in the application which will provide real time information on occupancy, no. of vacant berths etc. 
  • Besides HHT, ticket checking staff can also scan the displayed QR Code, through his/her mobile device having the capability of scanning the QR code. 
  • Any QR code scanning application available in Google Play store or iOS App Store such as QR & Barcode Scanner, QR Code reader, etc. can be used for this purpose. 
  • This application launched by CRIS covering entire reserved ticketing of Indian Railways is live now and SMS with URL links for generating QR code is being sent on provided mobile no. of passengers. 
  • Railway Board has asked Zonal Railways to train and sensitize all ticket checking staff for early implementation of contactless ticket checking scanning system. 
  • This QR code based contactless ticket scanning system was originally implemented on Prayagraj station of North Central Railway on pilot basis w.e.f. 01.06.20 which is now being implemented for the entire reserved ticketing system. 
  • Under the overall guidance of General Manager North Central and Northern Railway Shri Rajiv Chaudhry, Prayagraj divisional team led by DRM Sri Amitabha has implemented an advanced version of this system combining contactless ticket checking and issue of airport type boarding passes. 
  • Sr. DCM Prayagraj Shri Anshoo Pandey, actively involved in development of these systems informed that Prayagraj division is in touch with Railway Board for implementation of airport style boarding passes too on Pan India basis.
  • North Central Railway has been leading the way in implementing innovative ideas in Railway working.
  • Railway board has recently selected 08 innovations done by North Central Railway for implementation on all Zonal Railways. 
  • These 08 innovations are part of 20 “Good Works” selected by Railway Board from a total 2645 entries received from different Railway Units.
