
Alstom Transport India Limited has completed manufacturing the first driverless train set for Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase-2 project. The ceremonial transfer took place at Alstom’s Sricity facility. This marks the beginning of testing, followed by trials before its official operation in the Poonamalle Depot.
Contract Overview:
Chennai Metro Rail awarded the INR 1215.92 crore contract to Alstom Transport India for 36 driverless train sets, each with 3-car formations, under Phase-2. The scope includes design, manufacturing, testing, training, and a defect liability period of 24 months.
Manufacturing Process:
The manufacturing of the car body began in February 2024 at Alstom’s facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The process includes the car body construction followed by the fitment of equipment. The first train set has now been completed.
Ceremonial Transfer:
On 22nd September 2024, a ceremonial event took place, marking the transfer of the first train set to the Testing Bay. Attendees included key government officials, CMRL directors, and Alstom management.
Next Steps:
The train will undergo static testing at the Sricity facility. Afterward, it will be delivered to the Poonamalle Depot for dynamic trials within the Phase-2 network, followed by safety verifications before passenger service.

The completion of the first train set and its move to testing signify a major milestone for Chennai Metro Phase-2. Once testing is completed, the driverless train will soon join the city’s growing metro network, enhancing the urban transport system with advanced technology.
