Chennai Metro Corridor 3 speeds up the project by completing tunnel breakthrough at Sterling Road

A significant milestone has been achieved by Chennai Metro as TBM Siruvani successfully completed a tunnel breakthrough at Sterling Road Junction on Corridor 3, stretching from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri Sipcot. With this breakthrough, Chennai Metro moves one step closer to providing efficient transportation solutions to its residents.

The ​Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced the expansion of the Chennai city’s metro rail network as part of Phase II after the successful completion of the Phase I and Phase I Extension. CMRL has ventured into an extensive infrastructure development in the city comprising three more corridors of metro rail for a total length of 116.1 km. A total of 23 TBM’s (Tunnel Boring Machine) will be utilised in the tunnelling works for Phase 2 project.

Brief about ​Tunnel Breakthrough:

  • ​Corridor 3 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri Sipcot (45.4 km) which includes 28 underground stations and 19 elevated stations is part of CMRL’s extensive infrastructure development plan.
  • The project is funded by multi-national funding agencies such as JICA, ADB, AIIB, and NDB.
  • The 12 km underground section of Corridor 3 from Kellys to Taramani is being executed by Larsen & Toubro Limited, with the mobilisation of 8 TBMs.
  • ​One of the TBM Siruvani commenced its tunnel drive on 09.09.2023 from Chetpet Station to Sterling Road Junction in Corridor 3.
  • Covered a bored tunnel length of 703 m including a successful crossing of 51 m under the Cooum River with an overburden of 8.0 m and the TBM successfully reached its destination with a breakthrough at the Sterling Road Junction.

Archunan, Director (Projects) of CMRL, Mr. Tony Burchell (Team Leader-GC), Mr. Lathif Khan (Chief Track Expert-GC), Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Mandal (Chief Resident Engineer – GC), & Mr. Jeyaraman (Project Incharge – L&T) & other senior officials and staff from CMRL, GC and L&T Limited were present during the event.
