Chennai Metro inks key contracts for self-propelled rail grinding machine and consultancy services to boost property development

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has signed a contract with Harsco Rail LLC, USA, for a state-of-the-art rail-grinding machine worth Rs. 53.02 crores. Simultaneously, CMRL is exploring non-fare revenue by commercialising land near Thirumangalam Metro Station through a consultancy contract Rs. 27.61 Lakhs with Aarvee Associates and ANAROCK Property Consultants, marking strategic growth in urban development.

Rail Grinding Machine Contract:

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded a contract to Harsco Rail LLC, USA, valued at Rs. 53.02 crores, for the design, manufacturing, and commissioning of a Self-Propelled Rail-Grinding Machine with a minimum 8-stones module. The contract includes comprehensive maintenance and operation for four years. Rail grinding helps extend the rail’s service life by 25%, improving ride quality, track geometry, and reducing noise and vibration.

Land Commercialization Initiative:

In a strategic move to enhance non-fare revenue, CMRL has identified prime land near Thirumangalam Metro Station for commercial development. CMRL signed a contract 27.61 Lakhs with a joint venture of Aarvee Associates and ANAROCK Property Consultants for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), setting the stage for future commercial projects.

CMRL’s dual approach—boosting operational efficiency through the rail-grinding machine and unlocking land for commercial development—underscores its commitment to modernising Chennai’s metro infrastructure and maximising revenue opportunities.
