In a significant stride towards the advancement of its Phase-2 project, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded a substantial contract worth Rs. 137.86 Crores to M/s Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited. The contract pertains to the execution of Electrical and Mechanical Systems work within Corridor-5 of the Phase-2 project.
More Details:
Chennai Metro Rail Limited had recently floated a tender for Contract No. CMRL/PHASE-II/SYS/C5E&M-04/2023: Supply, Installation, Testing, Commissioning and Training of Electrical, Fire Protection and VAC works for 22 Elevated Stations from Koyambedu Market Metro to Elcot Park Metro including viaduct between the Stations (Ch.15576 to Ch.45300) for Corridor-5 of Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase –II.
Brief about the Contract:
- This work will provide the Electrical and Mechanical works in the 22 no’s Elevated Stations in Corridor-5.
- The tender was awarded to M/s Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited for an amount of Rs. 137.86 Crores.
What is CMRL Phase-2:
- Phase-2 expansion has been planned for a length of 118.9 Km network with 128 nos. of Stations. It consists of three Corridors i.e. Corridor -3 – From Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 Km), Corridor -4 – From Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass (26.1 Km), Corridor-5- From Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 Km).
- The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 63246/- Crore (Rupees Sixty three thousand two hundred and forty six only) (including IDC). The project is proposed to be completed by the end of 2026.
Signing Ceremony:
The Contract agreement was signed by Mr. Rajesh Chaturvedi, Director (Systems and Operations), CMRL and Mr. Jayant Deshpande, Business Development Head, Mr. Biplab Chattopadhyay, MEP – South Zone Head, Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited at MetroS, Nandanam, Chennai. Advisor, Mr. S. Ramasubbu (O&RS), Advisor, Mr. S. K. Natarajan (E&M), AGM Mr. K. Ravikumar (E&M), GC1 & GC2 E&M Experts along with senior officials of CMRL and Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited were present during the occasion.

The awarding of this contract marks a significant milestone in the progress of Chennai Metro Phase-2. With Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited at the helm of Electrical and Mechanical works, the project is poised to advance towards its completion goal by 2026, enhancing Chennai’s public transportation infrastructure.
