Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) marked a milestone with the flagging off of the first aerodynamic WAP-5 electric locomotives converted for Amrit Bharat trains. The conversion targets cost-effective use of existing locomotives, enhancing features like real-time information systems, crew video recording, and Kavach 4.0, offering substantial savings for Indian Railways.
Conversion and Features:
The event, led by Shri Hitendra Malhotra, General Manager of CLW, witnessed the presence of senior officials, supervisors, and staff. These WAP-5 locomotives, retrofitted for enhanced performance, will be integrated with LHB rakes at ICF and deployed in Amrit Bharat trains. CLW aims to convert 55 pairs of WAP-5 locomotives during the year 2024-25, introducing features such as:
- Aerodynamic cab design
- Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) interior furnishing
- Impact-resistant windshield
- Real-Time Information System (RTIS)
- Crew Voice & Video Recording System (CVVRS)
- Remote Monitoring System
- Enhanced EP assist brake system
- Kavach 4.0 safety system
Cost Efficiency:
The conversion of 55 pairs of WAP-5 locomotives represents a cost-effective solution for Indian Railways by reusing existing locos for 22-coach Amrit Bharat trains, avoiding the higher expense of manufacturing new ones. The integration of HOG supply further ensures efficient utilisation of power.
Conclusion:
The conversion of WAP-5 locomotives into aerodynamic variants showcases Indian Railways’ commitment to cost-efficiency and technological advancement. By upgrading existing assets, CLW delivers a sustainable solution that enhances train performance while optimising resources, reflecting progress toward modernising India’s rail network with innovative features.
