Delhi Metro Update: DMRC signs MoU with CPWD to provide Technical Assistance for construction of Metro loop corridor as part of Central Vista Project

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), as per which DMRC shall provide technical assistance as well as execute finishing and services works for the construction of a Metro loop corridor to connect the existing Metro network with the new Central Secretariat buildings, which shall come up as part of the Central Vista Area Redevelopment project.

  • The MoU was signed at Metro Bhawan today by DMRC’s Director, Business Development, Sh. Pramit Kumar Garg and Sh. P.S Chauhan, Additional Director General, CPWD in the presence of DMRC’s Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh and other senior officials.
  • A Metro loop corridor, about three kilometres in length, connecting four Central Secretariat buildings with the existing Central Secretariat Metro station is being proposed to cater to the office goers who shall travel to these offices using the Metro. 
  • Planning is being done expecting a peak hour demand of 20,000 passengers per hour during the morning and evening peak hours. 
  • The entire corridor shall be underground.
  • As per the MoU, DMRC shall prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) apart from finalising the horizontal and vertical alignment of the tracks and tunnels along with sizing of facilities like platforms, support services and maintenance facilities. 
  • DMRC shall also appoint the Detailed Design Consultant for the project.
  • While CPWD will carry out the basic civil structure construction work, DMRC shall execute all other finishing and services works including design and construction of control systems, signal systems, track work, rolling stock, electrical and maintenance works etc.   
  • Presently DMRC is operating a Metro network of 391 kilometres with 286 Metro stations. 
  • As part of its fourth phase of expansion, DMRC is engaged in the construction of 65 kilometres of new lines across three different corridors.

National Common Mobility Card (NCMC):

Delhi Metro in its sustained efforts for implementing the indigenously developed National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) in the entire Delhi Metro network, has entered into a contract with a consortium for executing the NCMC along with upgrade of complete ecosystem consisting of Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system which will also enable travel through QR Tickets, Account Based Ticket and Near Field Communications (NFC) Media.

  • In a big impetus to Govt. of India’s ‘One Nation One Card Policy’, the contract agreement for this Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) work for the three priority corridors (Janakpuri West –  RK Ashram Marg, Majlis Park – Maujpur and Tughalakabad – Aerocity) under Phase-IV and upgradation of existing (operational) Phase-I, II, and III Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system were awarded to a Consortium of M/S Revenue Collection Systems (Thales), France SAS and M/S Paytm Payments Bank Limited.
  • The implementation of NCMC & QR ticket will enable seamless travel by metro rails and other transport systems across the country besides retail shopping and purchases.  
  • In addition, with Mobile QR and NFC based tickets, passengers will also be able to use a mobile phone to enter or exit a metro station on its corridors.
  • At present, the Airport Express Line (23 KM) of Delhi Metro from New Delhi to Dwarka Sec-21 (6 stations) is having the NCMC and QR code ticketing facility available at its stations. 
  • With the award of this contract, the remaining operational corridors of Delhi Metro will also be equipped with NCMC and QR code compliant AFC system by June 2023.
