Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV), India’s first and only university dedicated to the transportation and logistics sector, has launched the Centre of Excellence in Transport Safety (CoETS). Sponsored by the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, this Central University initiative aims to transform transportation safety across the nation.
More Details:
The Centre of Excellence in Transport Safety (CoETS) is being established in response to the pressing need for improved safety measures in the transportation sector. Despite advancements, road accidents in India continue to disproportionately affect young adults, causing significant social and economic impacts. Similarly, while railway safety has improved, there is still much work to be done.
Addressing Safety Challenges Across All Modes of Transport:
GSV’s unique mandate focuses on enhancing the multimodal logistics ecosystem, covering all modes of transport including rail, road, air, water, ports, and shipping. The Centre will address infrastructure (technology), services (management), and regulatory reforms (policy) to boost the performance of India’s logistics sector.
The transportation sector faces numerous challenges, including accidents leading to economic losses, social consequences, and environmental damage. Current safety measures are often reactive rather than proactive. CoETS at GSV aims to shift this paradigm by employing data-driven insights and cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety across all modes of transport.
Vision and Mission of CoETS:
- Vision: To enhance transportation safety through innovation and best practices for India.
- Mission: To offer executive training, conduct world-class research, develop effective safety solutions, and build capacity to improve transportation safety across all modes.
The Centre is expected to achieve several key outcomes:
- Evaluate and Improve Safety Measures: Assess the effectiveness of existing safety measures and propose necessary improvements.
- Develop Advanced Safety Systems: Create innovative safety systems, including intelligent transportation systems, driver-assistance technologies, and predictive maintenance models.
- Provide Technical Assistance: Offer technical support to government agencies for the implementation of safety regulations and standards.
- Specialised Training Programs: Develop and provide training programs for transportation professionals, including safety managers, engineers, and policymakers.
- Establish a Safety Database: Build a comprehensive database of safety research, data, and best practices.
Conclusion:
The launch of the Centre of Excellence in Transport Safety at GSV marks a significant step towards creating a safer and more efficient transportation system in India. By focusing on proactive safety strategies and leveraging advanced technologies, CoETS is poised to save lives, reduce economic losses, and enhance the overall quality of life in the country.
