Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi inaugurates metro services on Orange Line and Aqua Line of Nagpur Metro

The Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated metro services by flagging off trains on the new sections and providing seamless connectivity on Orange Line (Khapri to Automotive Square Metro Station) and Aqua Line (Prajapati Nagar to Sitabuldi Interchange).

More Details:

  • This would herald the completion of Phase-I of Nagpur Metro Project, which encompasses 38 Metro stations and covers a distance of 40.012 km.
  • Simultaneously, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the second phase of the Nagpur Metro Rail Project. The Phase-II would be an extension of the first phase. The Phase-II includes 32 stations and covers a distance of 43.8 km and extends to Kanhan in North, Butibori MIDC in South, Transport Nagar (Kapsi) in East and Hingna in West.
  • It comprises 1.2 km at-grade with 2 stations and 42.6 km elevated with 30 stations. The Prime Minister will reach Zero Mile Metro Station at 10 am and go through the exhibition there. Models related to Metro projects have been placed there.
  • The Prime Minister board metro trains and deboard at Khapri Metro Station and flag off Metro trains on the two new routes and dedicate Nagpur Metro Rail Project Phase-I. He also performed Bhoomi Pujan of Second Phase of Nagpur Metro Rail Project.
  • The Reach–II which stretches from Sitabuldi Interchange to Automotive Square and is proposed to be inaugurated includes Gaddigodam Square, Nari Road, Kadbi Square, and Automotive Square Metro stations.
  • The total length of the route is 5.8 km. The Reach–IV which stretches from Sitabuldi Interchange to Prajapati Nagar includes Railway Station, Dosar Vaisya Square, Agrasen Square, Chitar Oli Square, Telephone Exchange, Ambedkar Square, Vaishnodevi Square and Pajapati Nagar Metro Stations. The total length is 8.30 km.
  • The 1.6 km long section between Sitabuldi Interchange and Kasturchand Park – part of Reach-II – was opened for passenger service, along with two metro stations of Kasturchand Park and Zero Mile Freedom Park on 20th August 2021.
  • The Orange Line between Sitabuldi Interchange and Khapri Metro Station was inaugurated on 7th March 2019. The services on Aqua Line between Sitabuldi Interchange and Lokmanya Nagar Metro Station was launched on 28th January 2020. Similarly passenger services on the 1.6 km section between Sitabuldi Interchange and Kasturchand Park were commissioned on 20th August 2021.
  • Reach-II: The Reach-II section runs parallel to Kamptee Road, which is one of the busiest roads of the city. As mentioned earlier, the stretch connects Automotive Square and Sitabuldi Interchange. One of the major and latest landmarks of the Reach is the four layer transportation structure, which includes Girder which was installed on 4th February, this year.

  • The four-layer transportation system includes the existing road and the railway track over it. Fly-over and railway Track are the next two levels of the 4- layer transportation system. History was created and these major records were scripted with the launching of Girder on 4th February 2022:
    • Installing 800 Tonne heavy Girder on India Railway Track is a unique record.
    • For the first time 1,670 Tonne capacity structure has been put in place in urban India.
    • Overall, 32,000 Height Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolts were used in the 800 tonne Girder. Similarly 80,000 bolts have been used in the complete structure.
    • The top-most part of the steel girder is at a height of 32 meters from the ground.
    • For the first time in the history of Indian Railways, a 22 meter wide Steel Girder was launched across the railway track.
    • Such a 4-layer transportation system is being constructed for the first time in the country.
  • Yet another prominent structure, which has become the cynosure for the people of Nagpur is the Zero Mile Freedom Park Metro Station. The station has been named to commemorate – 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, which is being celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav (AKAM) across the country.
  • The Freedom Park has an amphitheatre, a Battle Tank used bay Army during its successive wars, plaque giving history of Indian freedom struggle, Information Centre (Mahiti Kendra), Cascade to name a few things.
  • Zero Mile Station, after completion, would be a 20-storey building with spaces being given out for commercial purposes. The Metro train passes through the fifth floor of the station. As part of Property Development (PD) activity, an electronic market has been proposed there and spaces for shops have already been allotted to those who had applied for the same.
  • Reach–IV: The Reach–IV section stretches from Sitabuldi Interchange to Prajapati Nagar Metro Station. The metro alignment runs parallel to Central Avenue, which again happens to be a busy route. Marketplaces like Itwari, Mahal are lined up on either side of the Metro route. Central Avenue is the link between East and West Nagpur.

  • Murals and creative work has been depicted on the Metro stations on this route. Even as various events are being organized across the country to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav, Maha Metro has conceptualized unique artwork depicting Indians holding the national flag, at Dosar Vaishay Metro Station. Similarly, the city’s age-old tradition of Marbat Celebration has been depicted on a Metro pillar near Chitar Oli Metro Station.
  • One of the prominent festivals – Pola (especially celebrated by farmers wherein the ox are worshipped) and its celebration has been portrayed on a pillar located adjacent to Cotton Market Square Metro Station.
  • Nagpur Railway Station is also located on this stretch. Thus, the Metro Station, which is adjacent to the Railway Station provides perfect connectivity to outstation passengers.
  • Alike Kamptee Road, shops, government and private offices, hotels, banks are located on the entire stretch of the road.
