Kanpur Metro achieves major milestones: Final U-Girder installed and last tunnel stretch underway

Construction on the last 2.40 km underground stretch of Kanpur Metro is moving swiftly. The Azad TBM has completed its first drive on the up-line, while preparations for the down-line tunnel are underway. Meanwhile, the final U-girder for Corridor-1 has been installed, marking the completion of all precast structures.

Key Points of Kanpur Metro Corridor-1:

  • Corridor Overview: The first corridor of the Kanpur Metro spans 23.78 km, connecting IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta. The metro aims to decongest the city, making commuting more efficient for residents.
  • Priority Section: The 9 km priority section from IIT-Kanpur to Motijheel was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 28, 2021. This section has been operational since then.
  • Ongoing Construction: The remaining sections of Corridor-1 are progressing rapidly, with tunnelling work initiated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) named ‘Nana’ and ‘Tatya’. These machines are vital for completing the underground sections.

  • Technological Advancements: The construction utilises state-of-the-art TBMs tailored for Kanpur’s geological conditions, ensuring accuracy and safety throughout the tunnelling process.
  • Completion Milestones: A significant milestone was achieved with the placement of the last U-girder for the elevated section between Baradevi and Naubasta, marking the completion of all precast structure erections for Corridor-1.

Conclusion:

Kanpur Metro’s latest milestones signal significant progress in the city’s public transport infrastructure. With the final U-girder in place and the last tunnel stretch underway, the project is moving closer to its completion. This marks a crucial step in enhancing urban mobility and connecting communities more efficiently across Kanpur.
