Track construction has officially commenced in the ‘downline’ tunnel of the Kanpur Metro between Kanpur Central Station and Nayaganj. The 1250-metre stretch is seeing active rail laying and track welding. UPMRC’s MD, Shri Sushil Kumar has recently reviewed the progress of the underground station work.
Brief on Corridor 1 of the Kanpur Metro:
- Corridor Overview: Corridor 1 spans approximately 24 kilometres from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta. The project includes both elevated and underground sections, enhancing connectivity across various residential and commercial areas.
- IIT Kanpur Station: Located near IIT Kanpur on G.T. Road, this elevated station will provide connectivity to surrounding areas such as Kalyanpur, CPWD Staff Colony, and Rajkiya Unnyan Basti, facilitating easier access to the metro system for local residents and visitors.

- Nayaganj Station Design: Due to the dense commercial land use in Nayaganj, a bored tunnel station is proposed to minimise displacement and land acquisition. The station will feature Type IIC design with tunnels constructed using the NATM method, including vertical shafts for platform access and operational areas.
- Operational Strategy: The train operations are planned to optimise rolling stock usage and minimise empty running. Initially, trains will operate between IIT Kanpur and Moti Jheel until the full corridor is completed, after which services will extend to Naubasta.
- Mid-Terminal Facilities: The elevated section from IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel is expected to be completed first. A mid-terminal/reversal facility at Moti Jheel will allow for the initial operation of trains between IIT Kanpur and Moti Jheel, ensuring efficient use of resources and service readiness.
