Kanpur Metro: ‘Vidyarthi’ TBM begins tunnelling, last underground stretch underway

The Kanpur Metro project achieves a significant milestone as the ‘VidyarthiTBM begins its journey from Swadeshi Cotton Mill, tunnelling the last 2.4 km stretch on Corridor-1. With ‘Azad’ TBM progressing on the up-line and all precast structures completed, the metro’s connectivity from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta is advancing rapidly.

Corridor-1 Overview:

Corridor-1 of the Kanpur Metro spans about 24 kilometres, extending from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta. The corridor is a combination of elevated and underground sections, offering improved connectivity to several key residential and commercial areas in the city. Upon completion, it will drastically reduce travel time and ease congestion on the city’s roads.

Key Highlights of Corridor-1:

  • IIT Kanpur Station: The elevated station near IIT Kanpur on G.T. Road is expected to serve the surrounding neighbourhoods, including Kalyanpur and CPWD Staff Colony. This station will be a hub for students, residents, and visitors.
  • Nayaganj Station Design: Given the dense commercial landscape of Nayaganj, an underground bored tunnel station will be built to reduce land acquisition. Using the NATM method, the station will have vertical shafts for ease of access to platforms.

  • Operational Strategy: Train operations between IIT Kanpur and Moti Jheel will commence as an initial phase, before extending full services to Naubasta once Corridor-1 is fully completed. The mid-terminal at Moti Jheel ensures efficient early operations.
  • Mid-Terminal Facilities: Moti Jheel will serve as a mid-terminal, allowing initial metro operations to run smoothly between IIT Kanpur and this station, ahead of the full corridor’s completion.

Conclusion:

With the launch of ‘Vidyarthi’ TBM and the completion of all precast structures, the Kanpur Metro project is moving swiftly towards its goal. Once operational, Corridor-1 will enhance connectivity and improve commuting for thousands of residents, marking a transformative step for Kanpur’s urban infrastructure.
