After the renaming of Lucknow Metro rail Corporation Limited as Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited, civil construction work was inaugurated today for the Priority Corridor (IIT- Kanpur to Moti Jheel) of Kanpur Metro Project. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the construction work today on 15th Nov. 2019 (Friday) at IIT-Kanpur Main Gate (construction site location).
Along with Hon’ble CM, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs Shri Hardeep Singh Puri; Chief Secretary, GoUP; Principal Secretary (Housing), GoUP; Municipal Commissioner, Kanpur and senior officials of UPMRCL were also present at the inaugural. After the inaugural event at the construction site, Hon’ble CM Shri Yogi Adityanath addressed the dignitaries and guests at IIT- Kanpur’s Auditorium.
” The total length of the Kanpur Metro phase 1 will be 32.5 KM and it will have 2 corridors. The first corridor will be from IIT Kanpur till Naubasta of 23.5 KM and the second corridor of length 8.5 Km will be from Barat till Chandra Shekhar University. Both the corridors will be constructed simultaneously. We aim to finish the priority section by the end of 2021. It is a challenging task however we are determined to finish the project as per the deadlines ” said Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL).
It may be noted that Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, (UPMRCL) who is leading the Kanpur metro project hails from Kanpur only. He did his graduation from IIT Kanpur. Under his able leadership, Lucknow Metro’s construction work was completed before the deadline making it the fastest metro construction in India.
The contract to build the viaduct of an 8.728 km long elevated section of the priority corridor was awarded to Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. on 13.09.2019 and the piling work will begin in full swing from 15th Nov. 2019.
The 8.728 km long Priority Section includes stations at the IIT- Kanpur, Kalyanpur Railway Station, SPM Hospital, CSJM University, Gurudev Chauraha, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur Railway Station, Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, Moti Jheel.
The estimated expenditure towards this Priority Section is about 2000 Cr. and it is estimated that metro operations on the priority corridor will commence within a span of around 2 years. It has been that the construction of Depot of Kanpur Metro Rail Project’s Corridor-1 will be done at the Government Polytechnic’s land.
UPMRC had earlier completed the work of Lucknow Metro North-South Corridor Project within a record time of four and a half years and is so far the fastest ever constructed and executed metro rail project in the country.
