The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) achieved a significant milestone in its Phase-IV expansion with the successful breakthrough of two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) at Pulbangash Metro Station. Covering nearly 3 km, this marks the completion of twin tunnels connecting Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash on the Janakpuri West–R K Ashram corridor.
Introduction:
The two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), named Bhoomi and Srishti, emerged simultaneously at Pulbangash Metro Station, signalling the completion of the 3 km stretch from Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash on the Magenta Line extension (Janakpuri West – R K Ashram corridor).
Key Achievement:
- This simultaneous breakthrough is a rare feat in tunnelling operations, showcasing precision engineering and coordinated efforts.
- TBMs Bhoomi and Srishti’s simultaneous emergence is a significant accomplishment, particularly considering the complexity of operating two parallel machines in close proximity.
- This achievement further emphasises DMRC’s technical prowess in large-scale infrastructure projects.
Project Highlights:
The twin tunnels, spanning 2997 metres, were completed in just over 14 months at an average tunnelling rate of 8.2 metres per day per machine. Built 14-15 metres underground, the tunnels pass beneath densely populated regions and critical structures, including the Najafgarh drain. The challenging tunnelling through submerged water conditions was completed without damage to surrounding infrastructure.
Technical Specifications:
- The tunnels, with an internal diameter of 5.8 metres, feature six cross passages for passenger safety.
- The entire project was executed by M/s Afcons, the civil contractor responsible for this section.
- This breakthrough adds to DMRC’s tunnelling record, following a recent TBM breakthrough at the Chhatarpur Mandir site on the Delhi Aerocity-Tughlakabad Corridor.
Conclusion:
This twin tunnel breakthrough at Pulbangash marks a critical advancement in DMRC’s Phase-IV expansion, building on its impressive track record in underground construction. With TBMs Bhoomi and Srishti completing the 3 km stretch, DMRC continues to set new benchmarks in urban tunnelling.
