MRIDC lays foundation stone of ROB from Kadbi Chowk to Golibar Chowk and 4 ROBs on Nagpur (Itwari)-Nagbhir Railway Line

Nagpur, popularly known as the ‘Orange City’, is one of the fastest growing metropolises and  the third largest city after Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra. Nagpur region has a dense  Railway network, the Nagpur Station is getting saturated as the city is growing in terms of business, education, industry, manufacturing and research. In order to ease the Railway Traffic in the region, Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) also known as Maha Rails implemented Rail line and Road infrastructure development works across Nagpur region.

  • Maha Rail, established with a vision to meet the growing demands for new projects  and to expedite ongoing infra projects in the State of Maharashtra, the Corporation promises to address the infrastructural demands in Maharashtra by providing critical connectivity and capacity enhancement.
  • Maha Rail is entrusted with the responsibility of constructing two lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) from Kadbi Chowk to Golibar Chowkand Subway connecting Pachpaoli and Bhankheda Road to eliminate traffic congestion and to ease transport facilities of the local residents under Central Road Fund (CRF), Ministry of Road Transportand Highways, Govt. of India.
  • To start the construction work, the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was organized on Saturday, 31st July 2021 at 12:00 am opposite SECR Narrow Gauge Rail Museum, Moti Bagh, Nagpur.
  • The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony is performed at the hands of the Chief Guest Hon’ Minister of Road Transport  and Highways, Government of India, Shri. Nitin Gadkari.
  • Along with the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of ROB from Kadbi Chowk to Golibar Chowk, the Chief Guest Hon’ Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India Shri. Nitin Gadkari performed the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of four ROBs/LHS being constructed at LC 73, LC 69, LC 34 and LC 33 on the Gauge Conversion work between Nagpur (Itwari) and Nagbhir Railway Line.

Salient Features of ROB from Kadbi Chowk to Golibar Chowk:

  • Main ROB will provide direct connectivity from Golibar Chowk to Kadbi Chowk and vice versa.
  • The additional arm is provided to facilitate the movement of ascending and descending vehicles towards Santra Market and residential areas in Mominpura.
  • Subway is provided to connect Bhankheda and Panchpaoli areas to ease transport facilitates of local habitants
  • The total length of ROB is 2.82 Km including the approach to Nagpur Railway Station from Santra Market side.

Project Specifications:

  • Total Length: 2.82 Km

Nagpur (Itwari)–NagbhirGauge Conversion Work:

  • MRIDC is implementing the conversion work of the last remaining Narrow-Gauge line   between Itwari and Nagbhir (116 km) into a Broad-Gauge (BG) Line with electrification.
  • This will ensure faster movement of goods as well as passenger trains on the route. This project will expedite the coal movement from the coal mines and reduce congestion on the existing route. MRIDC plans to connect the line to coal mines in Umred.
  • The line will be an alternative to passenger trains as well as direct link to North-South bound freight trains.

Project Specification:

  • Total Length: 116 Kms
  • No. of Stations: 19
ROBs: 6 Speed Potential: Passenger Trains –160 Km/Hour; Goods Trains –100Km/Hour Completion Month: December 2022
  • Project Cost: Rs. 1400 Crs.

Significance of the project:

  • It will ensure faster movement of goods as well as passenger trains on the route. It  will reduce the Coal rake movement time from present 22 hrs to 4 hrs from Umrer to Koradi Thermal Power Plant.
  • It will be of immense benefit for transportation of coal from Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) mines located in Umred & Chandrapur district.
  • Coal Transportation from Umred coal mines will be easy, faster and economical to Koradi Thermal Power Station  (KTPS), Adani Power Maharashtra Ltd, (APML) Tirora, Mauda Super Thermal Power Station.
  • It will facilitate decongestion of Nagpur and other Railway areas like Kalumna, Itwari, Ajni and Wardha Railway yards etc. Thus, facilitating running of shuttle passenger trains in and around Nagpur.
  • This Railway Line will ease congestion on the over saturated Wardha-Sewagram-Nagpur route. This Broad-Gauge Railway Line will be ‘Railway Fatak Free’. As a safety measure, Road Over Bridges and Subways are being  constructed across  all  the  level crossings along the route.

Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, Managing Director,  MRIDC informed –“Nagpur region is on Rail and  Road Infrastructure development drive. ROB from Kadbi Chowk to Golibar Chowk by MRIDC will help to smooth and ease the vehicular traffic movement towards Nagpur Railway Station and surrounding areas especially Santra Market, Golibar Chowk, Kabdi Chowk and residential localities of Mominpura.Nagpur region is witnessing heavy Railway traffic due to  the movement of around235 Passengers & Express trains and around 217 Freight trains. With the construction of Itwari-Nagbhir Railway Line, it will facilitate decongestion of Nagpur,  Kalumna, Itwari, Ajni and Wardha RailwayStations. Thus, facilitating running of shuttle passenger trains in and around Nagpur.”

He further informed, “MRIDC is also implementing the construction work of 69 ROBs across  Maharashtrahanded over by Public Work Department, Government of Maharashtra. Out of  these 69 ROBs, 30 ROBs/RUBsarebeing constructed inVidarbhaRegion. MRIDC has started construction of these ROBs across Nagpur-Warda Section, Amla-Nagpur Section, Nagpur-Balharshah Section, Nagpur Durg Sections, Babupeth Gondia Sections etc. Elimination of Level Crossings by construction of ROB/RUB & LHS will provide smooth road connectivity, it will also reduce traffic congestion and prevent accidents on Railway track due to the elimination of LC gates. Additionally, MRIDC has proposed construction of Chord Lines between Salwa & Butibori and between Wardha & Katol to decongest the Ajni, Nagpur, Kalumna and Itwari Railway stations. This will allow smooth freight train movements from East, West, Northand South bypassing Nagpurand nearby Railway stations thus providing opportunities to run Shuttle services from Nagpur to other major cities and towns in Vidarbha Region.”
