Mumbai Metro Update: Trial Runs begins on 20-km long stretch from Dhanukarwadi (Line 2A) to Goregaon East (Line 7)

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started the initial Metro Trial Runs on a 20-km long metro stretch from Dhanukarwadi (Line 2A) to Goregaon East (Line 7). The dynamic testing and trial runs will be conducted by the joint team of MMRDA, MMMOCL, BEML & DMRC.

  • This thorough testing will continue for 4 months as it will undergo various clearance and safety norm approvals.
  • The pandemic created many obstacles such as labor migration, procuring of stocks from various countries, and lockdown restrictions.
  • MMRDA said,”But we would like to share our appreciation for the commitment shown by the whole workforce towards the goal of Mumbai In Minutes.”
  • The CEIG conducted the prerequisite statutory requirement of inspecting the OHE line on 22nd May.
  • MMRDA said,”as soon as we got the approval to charge the OHE line on the trial stretch, our team promptly carried out the final preparations for the first ever trial run on Line 2A & Line 7.”
  • Along with the Metro Trial Run, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated one-side-arm of Rajnoli Flyover & Durgadi Flyover and the Bhoomi Poojan of underground & elevated road on WEH (T1 & T2) & the Book launch of ‘Multiplicities’.

Rolling Stock:

  • The MMRDA has given a contract to BEML for 576 cars/coaches worth Rs. 4350 crore.
  • Earlier, MMRDA had given a contract to BEML to manufacture 504 cars (84 train sets) costing Rs 3816 crore.
  • However, due to the extension of both Metro Line 2A and 7 the requirement of metro rakes increased.
  • The first Indigenously-built metro coach to be used for the Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Dahisar East to DN Nagar) and Line 7 (Andheri East to Dahisar East) arrived in Mumbai on 28.01.2021.
  • The manufacturing company Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) delivered the first “Made in India” metro rake from its Bengaluru facility.

About Metro Line 2A:

  • Metro Line 2A from Dahisar to D N Nagar is 18.589 km. long elevated corridor with 17 stations.
  • It will provide interconnectivity among the existing Western Express Highway, Western Railway, Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar to Versova), the ongoing Metro Lines 2B (D N Nagar to Mandale) & 7 (Andheri (E) to Dahisar (E)) and the proposed Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli).
  • It will facilitate smooth and efficient interchange with the suburban rail system and MRT system at Dahisar and D N Nagar.
  • This Metro line will provide connectivity between the Western, Central Mumbai and the Northern suburban Mumbai.

About Metro Line 7:

  • Metro Line 7 from Andheri (E) to Dahisar (E) is 16.475 km. long elevated corridor with 13 stations.
  • It will provide interconnectivity among the existing Western Express Highway, Western Railway, Metro Line 1 (Ghatkopar to Versova), the ongoing Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to D N Nagar) and the proposed Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli).
  • It will facilitate smooth and efficient interchange with the suburban rail system and MRT system at Andheri, JVLR and Dahisar.
  • The Metro line will provide rail based access to the Mumbai International Airport (CSIA), SEEPZ, National Park and other commercial and geographical landmarks.
  • Dedicated Depot is planned at Dahisar in an extent of 15 Ha.
