Nagpur Metro Update: Heritage Committee approves to name Zero Mile Metro Station as ‘Zero Mile Freedom Park Station’

On the occasion of the country’s 75rd Independence Day, the Prime Minister’s Office will name the metro station at Zero Mile as ′′ Zero Mile Freedom Park Station ′′ at the Amrit Jubilee ceremony. According to this, the committee will place the historic cannon found while doing development works at Kasturchand Park Ground at Zero Mile Freedom Park Station.

  • This proposal of Mahametro Nagpur has been approved at the meeting of Nagpur Heritage Conservation Committee on Tuesday (June 15).
  • Meanwhile, Despite adverse conditions prevailing due to Covid-19 pandemic, Maha Metro recently successfully held a trial run of a Metro train on Reach-2 between Zero Mile and Kasturchand Park stations.
  • This is the first step towards making Reach-2 (Sitabuldi to Automotive Square) operational in December 2021.
  • Reach-4 (Sitabuldi to Prajapati Nagar) will also be made operational by the end of this year.
  • A distance of 1 km was covered at a speed of 20 km per hour.
  • The work of signaling, overhead equipment (OHE) and track had been completed in this portion and proved to be perfect during the trial run.
  • Work on the remaining portion of Reach-2 is going on at full swing under leadership of Maha Metro Managing Director Dr Brijesh Dixit.
  • This portion of Reach-2 is very important as the track passes near Vidhan Bhavan, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Kasturchand Park.

Ajni Metro Station gets IGBC Platinum Rating:

Even as World Environment Day is celebrated across the globe, Maha Metro Nagpur has scored again on the environment front. The Organization has bagged the highest ever Platinum Rating from Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for its Ajni Metro Station.

  • Of all the operational stations of Nagpur Metro Project, Ajni is the 14th one to bag this prestigious ranking.
  • The rating is based on IGBC’s Green MRTS Rating system.
  • The other stations of Nagpur Metro which have bagged this ratings before are:- Khapri, New Airport, Airport South, Airport, Jai Prakash Nagar, Rahate Colony, Ajni square, Sitabuldi Interchange Metro Stations on Orange Line and Lokmanya Nagar, Bansi Nagar, Wasudev Nagar, Subhash Nagar, Institute of Engineers, Jhansi Rani Square Metro Stations on Aqua line.
  • Metro Bhavan has also been awarded this rating.
  • The Platinum rating is based on some of these grounds:-
    • Meeting 65% of energy needs from solar energy
    • Adopting bio-digesters at stations
    • 100% water recycling and rain-water harvesting
    • Constructing stations and other buildings
  • Maha Metro is the greenest agency in the city.

ISO Certification:

  • Also, Nagpur Metro Rail Project has received ISO 14001 Certification.
  • Environment Management System (EMS) ISO 14001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective EMS.
  • The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’.

Green Metro:

  • Nagpur Metro is the greenest Metro in the country with 65% of its electricity requirement to be met from solar power.
  • Solar panels have been put atop many stations and Maha Metro’s head office Metro Bhavan.
  • Many more will be installed soon.
  • Maha Metro has installed bio-digesters in all its stations and offices of Nagpur to recycle waste water.
  • The agency does 100% rainwater harvesting in all its buildings.
  • Maha Metro has developed vertical gardens on its pillars on Wardha Road and Hingna Road.
