North Central Railway prepares comprehensive plan for installing way train examination systems on trunk routes

Observing safe passage of trains without any defect like hot axle, hanging part, brake binding etc. are conventionally checked by station, gate and rolling in staff on Indian Railways. However with increase in speed of trains, elimination of level crossing gates by ROB/RUBS and elimination of station end cabins it is imperative that automated way side rolling stock monitoring systems capable of detecting these defects and raising alert without any human intervention are installed to augment efforts of alert Railwaymen.

  • North Central Railway the pioneer in the field of automated way side monitoring of trains have already made a headway in this direction through installing many advanced systems for monitoring of moving trains over Prayagraj and other divisions.
  • Hot Axle and Hot wheel detectors (HAHW) or automatic train examination system (ATES) for identifying hot axle and brake binding in moving trains, Wheel Impact load detector (WILD) for identifying flat wheel or wheel with out of roundness, Online Rolling stock monitoring system (OMRS) a combination of HAHW/ATES and WILD, Hanging part detection system (HPDS) for identifying loose and unsafe object in running train, CCTV at Rolling in examination points for visual examination of train etc. are installed at different locations over NCR.
  • General Manager North Central and Northern Railway Shri Rajiv Chaudhry has been stressing to prepare a comprehensive safety grid so as entire stretch of North Central railway is covered for each type of defect.
  • Accordingly based on capability of each equipment w.r.t. defect identification a judicious mix of equipments has been prepared by mechanical department; which will now be followed for installing additional systems in consultation with operations wing of North Central Railway.
  • At present 02 Hot axle & hot wheel detector (HAHW), 01 Hanging part detector (HPDS), 02 Wheel impact load detectors (WILD) and 02 On line rolling stock monitoring systems (OMRS) are functional over NCR while 03 automatic train examination system (ATES) and one wheel impact load detector(WILD) are under installation.
  • Besides these, 16 HAHW/ ATES, 02 OMRS and 44 Low speed HAHW suitable for rolling in examination points at entry to major stations sanctioned additionally are being procured by COFMOW as well as North Central Railway.
  • Under the comprehensive plan these equipments have been positioned in such a way that both trunk routes of 759 Kms between Gaziabad – Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Jn. and 503 Kms between Palwal – Bina are evenly covered for each type of defect identification.
  • Installation and commissioning of these additional equipments will ensure checking of train at regular interval on both trunk routes in less than 100 kms spacing from one equipment to other.
  • This will ensure timely identification of various defects in moving trains and attention thereof will help in safer and detention free train operations.
