Introduction:
With the advancements towards high-speed trains and the challenging ground conditions on which the railway formations need to be constructed, the requirement of enhancing the train speeds even on the challenging conditions becomes inevitable. Under the present conditions of growing scarcity of natural aggregates/stones, stringent construction timelines and growing concerns towards environmental pollutions due to these constructions, it is certain to use of alternative materials which minimizes use of natural aggregates/stones, reduce carbon emissions on the environment, enables quick construction and cost effective compared to the conventional solutions. Geosynthetics are go to materials to achieve the above desired objectives.

Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) of Indian Railways has published “Comprehensive Guidelines and Specifications for Railway Formation” vide specification no: RDSO/2020/GE: IRS-0004 in September 2020.
