Product Expertise: Liquid shim system mm1018 for bearing structure gap interface in bridges

Steel connections are widely seen across any heavy engineering construction, be they bridges, power plants or process plants. Traditionally, these have been connected together with a design requirement of 100% contact for complete designed load transfer. However, achieving a 100% contact has been one of the most difficult and expensive processes in the assembly of steel elements.

In recent years, New polymeric formulations have been developed that allow high load transfer without deformation like creep or shrinkage. These new generation formulations use very high strength fillers in a matrix that boasts of low creep, nearly zero shrinkage, ability to withstand high cyclic loads and have no functional impact / degradation from environmental factors such as salt water, UV Light, heat and rain.

DIAMANT MM1018 is a special Metal grout formulated in Germany in early 1980’s and now manufactured in India. MM1018 delivers high compression strength (160 MaP) in less than 24 hours and can fill gaps as low as 0.1mm with detailed product and performance testing by DiBT, Germany. Over the years, MM1018 has been a very popular choice for a number of typical Railway applications in India and across the Globe:

  • Gap compensation between bearing and structure at top and / or bottom of Bearings.
  • Quick replacement and Grouting of Bearing on Active railway projects with Grout achieving strength in 4 hours.

Gaps and Gap Compensation with MM1018 for Railway bearings

Traditionally gaps are observed in bearing connections where the Bearing top or bottom plates interface with field fabricated counter surfaces. These counter surfaces show various uneven gaps sometime due to camber in the structure and many a times due to field fabrication processes. The presence of uneven gaps leads to improper load transfer on the bearings which in many cases leads to severely reduced Bearing performance and life.

Gaps between metal surfaces have traditionally been repaired using shims, taper wedges or non-metallic grouts. Each of these methods have failed due to inherent limitations of the methods, such as improper contact of the wedges or the crushing failure of the grouts. MM1018 was developed in close cooperation with bearing producers and European Railways to address these shortcomings. Over the years a number of critical bridges in India have seen the acceptance and use of MM1018

for various interfaces including structural base plates, bearings and steel-steel connections.

Advantages of MM1018:

  • 100% volume compensation inside the gap
  • Faster than Traditional Grouting methods
  • Gap compensation to near Zero to 140 mm.
  • No machining required
  • Rapid on-the-spot assistance – no dismantling required
  • No temperature loads attaching the parts
  • Full corrosion protection of connecting surfaces
  • Resistant to weathering and chemicals (salt, oil, etc.)
  • Tested, certified and approved by multiple agencies around the world (DiBT ,ABS…)
  • Long-term experience due to well over 10000 applications worldwide
  • Offers substantial cost & time savings compared to conventional methods
  • Advise and technical service by specialised, trained DIAMANT staff.
