SER completes renovation of its Goods Sheds & Yard Sidings to fetch more freight traffic

South Eastern Railway, as per the guidelines given by the Railway Board, has already set up Business Development Units (BDUs) at its headquarters, Kolkata  and its other four Divisional headquarters at Kharagpur, Adra, Ranchi  and Chakradharpur to attract the Business Community especially those who are still now preferring to other modes of transportation, viz., road and water, offering various lucrative discount schemes  as per the new liberalised freight policy with a view to increase more freight  traffic.

  • The main objective of setting up such BDUs is to fetch new goods traffic by making rail transport as more competitive than other modes. 
  • These Units are regularly meeting with different Chambers of Commerce and trade bodies to apprise of various attractive  discount schemes with customers’ satisfaction for transportation of their goods traffic by rail. 
  • With the overwhelming responses from various private as well as public parties of the Business Community to transport more consignments by Railways.
  • South Eastern Railway has already planned to rejig all the Goods Sheds and Yard Sidings in its four Divisions viz., Kharagpur, Adra, Ranchi and Chakradharpur with a view to accommodate more consignments in well protected manner to prevent any kind of damage.
  • Construction work under phase-1 of Sankrail Freight Terminal has already been commissioned. 
  • Other works viz. Ballasting, one Road Over Bridge, new approach road and electrical are in progress in full swing.  
  • Loading wharf of line no.8 for unloading of steel consignments has already been completed and loading has started since 15.08.2020.
  • Other works completed include:
    • Electrification of Siding in Gokulpur. 
    • Modification of Nimpura Departure Yard in Kharagpur Division.
    • Inside wharf surface at Goods Shed at Gola Road in Ranchi Division. 
    • Extension of Goods Shed in Bokaro Steel City in Adra Division.
    • Full rake length loading line in Badampahar
    • Concrete loading platform in Banspani and Jaroli in Chakradharpur Division.

Goods sheds and sidings are being developed to pick up the consignments from the doorsteps of the business houses and to connect the upcoming industries.  

South Eastern Railway is committed to Businessmen, freight customers and traders for providing all sorts of facilities in transit and has assured safe and hassle-free transportation of their goods traffic to different destinations in every nook and corner of the country.

Track Maintenance works:

In train movement, rail track constitutes the most important part of the infrastructure providing a guided path for the wheels to move and carries the huge moving loads. The rail routes of SER have high density of freight and passenger trains. Presently, SER has 6464.624 Track km stretching over Kharagpur, Adra, Chakradharpur and Ranchi Divisions. 

  • A large number of Mail/Express, Passenger and Goods trains have been running over them daily. 
  • Monitoring of track is continuous activity. 
  • Section Engineers, Permanent Way Inspectors and staff of track maintenance are working round the clock despite nation-wide Covid-19 crises to keep safe, secured and well-maintained railway track. 
  • Infrastructural Civil Engineers and Section Engineers of the Engineering Department have laid emphasis o­n line maintenance works and have done their best out night and day across SER’s jurisdiction. 
  • Security services are o­n patrol and Safety Inspectors are engaged in regular inspections. 
  • PWIs and Track-men are continuing to maintain proactively railway track inspite of Coronavirus threat and restrictions. 
  • The vast network of SER has been divided into various maintenance sections for close and thorough check up & inspections.  
  • These lengthy and massive railway tracks are being supervised and maintained by those track-men and Section Engineers who are excellent practical men with long experience of keeping tracks in good repair. 
  • Railway tracks are being inspected o­n regular intervals to see that every section is fit for freight traffic and passenger traffic.
  • In the wake of Covid-19 pandemic and country-wide health & physical precautions, SER has been running a number of Parcel Express Trains for uninterrupted supply of essential commodities and pharmaceuticals to reach out to the people across the country. 
  • In this situation, SER Track-men and Permanent Way Engineers have been engaged in track maintenance works wearing face masks and keeping social distancing to ensure the rail safety as well as smooth running of numerous freight and passenger trains.
