SWR installs IP based Video Surveillance System (VSS) at 11 railway stations to enhance safety

The Ministry of Railways has planned to install internet protocol (IP) based video surveillance system (VSS) at railway stations to improve safety at Railway stations. VSS is being installed in waiting areas, reservation counters, parking areas, main entrances & exits, platforms, foot over bridges, and booking offices. The Railway Board has approved the installation of the system in 983 stations across India under Nirbhaya fund.

  • On South Western Railway VSS has recently been provided at Eleven (11) railway stations. 
  • 4K resolution Ultra HD cameras for facial recognition have been deployed for the first time at these stations. 
  • Video Recording & storage facility has been provided at the stations.  
  • The facility to view the recording of the cameras are provided at 3 levels, (1) At stations with 8 Mbps bandwidth (2) At Divisional security control room of the divisions with 50 Mbps bandwidth and (3) Central viewing at the Zonal Security Control Room of SWR with 50 Mbps Bandwidth.
  • The VSS has been provided at Bengaluru Cant. (27 Cameras) Bangarapet (36 Cam.) Belgaum (40 Cam.), Ballari (37 Cam.), Hassan (35 Cam.), Hosapete (22 Cam.) Hubballi (19 Cam.) Krishnarajapuram (30 Cam.) Shivamogga (29 Cam.), SSP Nilayam (25 Cam.) & Vasco-da-gama (40 Cam.). 
  • Already three stations in SWR have been provided with Integrated Security System (ISS) at KSR Bengaluru, Yesvantpur and Mysuru.
  • To monitor the VSS system round the clock, security personnel will be available at the control rooms.  
  • Further to investigate if any complaints or unusual occurrences at stations, a storage backup of up to o­ne month has been provided at these locations.
  • Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, GM/SWR on 11.02.2021 inaugurated the Integrated Security Command and Control Centre for VSS at 11 stations SWR at Rail Soudha.  
  • The work was taken up under the initiative of Shri P V Raja Shekar, PCSTE/SWR and Shri R S Chauhan, PCSC/SWR. 
  • The work was done by telecommunication PSU of Railways, Railtel.  
  • Shri Alok Kumar, PCPO/SWR, Shri Anil Pavithran, PCCM/SWR, Shri Vilas Gunda, PCMD/SWR, Kum. Roopa Srinvasan, PFA/SWR and Shri Chandra Kishore Prasad, RGM, RailTel were present.
  • Shri Ajay Kumar Singh informed that 6 more stations o­n SWR will be provided with VSS by March 2021 – Vijayapura, Gadag, Davangere, Birur, Banaswadi & Kengeri.
  • Shri Singh said that Railways is utilising technology in a big way to upgrade Safety and Security in Railway premises. 
  • Network Management System for VSS deployed at stations has been provided for monitoring.
  • To have a better coverage and clearer image, four types of Full HD Cameras – Dome type (for indoor areas), Bullet type (for platforms), Pan Tilt Zoom type (for parking areas) and Ultra HD- 4k cameras (for crucial locations) are being provided.
  • CCTV camera live feeds are displayed o­n multiple screens at the Railway Protection Force (RPF) control room for monitoring. 
  • The coverage of cameras can be viewed from any web browser a particular URL.
