Bullet Train Update: Track construction training module completed for MAHSR corridor

A comprehensive 20-day hands-on training module related to Slab track and Cement Asphalt Mortar CAM) has been completed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. With continuous investment in upskilling of professionals, NHSRCL aims to impart advanced technological skills to set new benchmarks in high-speed rail construction and operation in India.

More Details:

Another track construction training module for Indian engineers and work leaders for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is completed. This 20-day hands-on training program was related to Slab Track and Cement Asphalt Mortar (CAM) installation. This specialized training was designed to equip Indian engineers and work leaders with the advanced skills and knowledge necessary for the successful implementation of these critical components in high-speed rail construction.

Twenty (20) engineers, work leaders and technicians are being trained by six (06) Japanese experts during the program at the Track Training Facility specially built for High-Speed Rail Track installation training in Surat. They will be certified post successful completion of the training module. Japanese experts will train and certify approximately 1000 Indian engineers in 15 different modules for track construction of the Bullet Train project.

Track Construction Training Module for Indian Engineers:

  • Recently, a comprehensive 20-day training program was begun for Indian engineers and work leaders on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project.
  • Organised by JARTS and facilitated by experts nominated by JICA, the session is dedicated to mastering the techniques of Slab Track and Cement Asphalt Mortar (CAM) installation, crucial components for the high-speed rail infrastructure.
  • The training for Indian engineers and work leaders was started in Surat for construction of track works for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project.
  • The 20 days training session on track construction will focus on Slab Track Installation and Cement Asphalt Mortar (CAM) installation.

JARTS will train the Workers:

  • The training was imparted by JARTS (a non-profit organisation in Japan), nominated by JICA (funding agency of Bullet Train project), through Japanese Experts in relevant fields.
  • Nearly 20 engineers/work leaders/technicians are planned to be trained during the course.
  • Six (06) Japanese experts are imparting intensive training to the Indian engineers, supervisors & technicians.
  • The training for site managers, track slab manufacturing, RC Track Bed construction, reference pin survey and data analysis has already been completed.

What is Slab Track System for High Speed Railway:

  • Slab Track structure is a unique feature of Japanese High Speed Railway, popularly known as Shinkansen. Slab Track was invented and has evolved in Japan and now the term is synonymous with High Speed Track.
  • Slab Track consists of precast Reinforced Concrete (RC) slab, over which fastening devices and rails are fitted. Over the roadbed concrete, either on viaduct or in tunnel, track bed concrete of about 300 mm and circular concrete dowel/ anchors of diameter 520 mm and height 250 mm are casted at regular intervals of 5 metres.
  • Over the track bed concrete, the track slab is laid and a gap of about 50 mm is created between them which is filled by pouring Cement Asphalt Mortar in specially designed synthetic bags.
  • The RC slabs for Slab Tracks are produced in a factory. The track slab is 2200 mm wide, 4900 mm long and 190 mm thick. One track slab weighs around 3.9 tons. The production cycle of a track slab is about 24 hours, this is followed by 7 days of water curing. After this the track slab is ready for installation.

What is Cement Asphalt Mortar:

  • Cement Asphalt Mortar (CAM) is a buffer material for Slab Track which provides resilience to the whole structure.
  • The Concrete Anchors prevent Slab Track from moving either in the longitudinal or in transverse direction.
  • The purpose is filling material under track slabs. Filling material between track slab and reinforced concrete anchor in tunnel sections.
  • Mixed mortar made of both cement and asphalt with appropriate elastic modulus and vibration absorption.
