In a collaborative effort to boost innovation in sustainable cold chain logistics, CONCOR teamed up with ITE Japan to unveil the ice battery technology fitted containers. For this, CONCOR signed a MoU to utilise ITE’s patented ‘Ice Battery technology’ in containers for temperature-sensitive cargo. Trials of this innovative technology have already been successfully conducted, paving the way for more environmentally friendly logistics solutions.

Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) joined forces with Innovation Thru Energy (ITE), Japan to explore green logistics solutions, using ITE’s patented ‘Ice Battery technology’, this unique passive cooling technology does not require a diesel-based DG set for maintaining a cold chain during transportation. Thus, it is an important step towards providing an environmentally friendly cold chain logistics solution. Also, the technology maintains required humidity and freshness for up to 72 hours- ideal for temperature-sensitive products.
Progress under MoU:
- Recently, Mr. Sanjay Swarup, CMD of CONCOR, met Mrs. Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairman & CEO Railway Board, along with Mr. Masanori Nagaya, Director-M/s Innovation Thru Energy (ITE), Japan, and apprised her of innovative cold chain logistics solutions using ITE’s patented ‘Ice Battery technology’ that has been adopted by CONCOR.
- The trial movements have already been carried out, for temperature-sensitive cargo, using this ice battery technology fitted in containers. CONCOR is committed to undertake innovation and develop unique & eco-friendly products to enhance customer satisfaction.
- Thirteen (13) containers taken on lease and movements carried out in various parts of the country and products being marketed aggressively jointly with the team of M/s ITE.
Passive Cooling Technology Through Ice Battery:
- Developed by M/s Innovation Thru Energy Company Limited (ITE), Japan, IB Technology is an environmentally conscious substitute for Dry Ice and Diesel driven Refrigerated Truck.
- Multi-Temperature controlled system for preservation of Pharma/Agri products and other temperature-sensitive products.
- Technology is compatible with 20ft /40ft containers thus facilitating multi-modal movement through land/sea mode.
Features of Ice Battery Containers:
- Maintain Chilled Temperature for 48-72 hrs without electricity.
- Doesn’t affect the temperature while loading and unloading.
- Reduce Co2 emission by 70-80%
- By managing humidity, the system helps to prevent dehydration and preserve the freshness of perishables for a longer duration.
- Ice Battery Plates are designed to be reusable, offering significant advantage in terms of cost saving.
The partnership for sustainable cold chain logistics highlights the efforts being made by CONCOR and Indian Railways to develop and foster innovation in the cold chain logistics sector in order to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of the railways in carrying out cold chain logistics operations in an efficient and sustainable manner.
