UPMRC advances Kanpur metro rail project: Girders placed from Moti Jheel to Chunniganj

In a recent development, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) has completed the placement of U-girders and I-girders in the 315 m long ramp for Kanpur Metro project. This ramp will connect Moti Jheel to Chunniganj on the priority corridor.

Kanpur Metro project comes under UPMRC, has completed the work of placing U-girders and I-girders in the 315 m long ramp area connecting Moti Jheel to Chunniganj. With this, the construction of the track base in this area is now complete. Recently, steel spans were also constructed under this area.

Kanpur Metro Rail Project comprises 2 corridors. First corridor from ‘IIT Kanpur to Naubasta’ is 23.8 km long while the second corridor from ‘Chandrashekar Azad Agriculture University to Barra-8’ is 8.6 km long.

Brief about Moti Jheel Station:

  • The proposed alignment of Corridor-1 starts from IIT Kanpur along Aligarh –
  • Kanpur Road (NH-91) is elevated and heads in the East direction and the Moti Jheel is the last station of IIT Kanpur – Moti Jheel Section.
  • Total length of the section is about 9.0 Km and is completely elevated. Following 9 elevated stations have been proposed in this section namely, IIT Kanpur, Kalyanpur, SPM Hospital, CSJM University, Gurudev Chauraha, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur, Lala Lajpat Rai, Moti Jheel.

  • From the point of construction and operational phasing, Moti Jheel Station will be a priority stretch for corridor-1 and accordingly, planned as Mid-Terminal Station with facilities for reversal. Station is proposed at Ch: 8003 m which is about 750 m from Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital station (towards IIT Kanpur) and about 1850 m from Chunniganj Station (towards Naubasta).
  • It is an elevated station proposed on Mall Road near Moti Jheel Park. The major road connecting the station is Moti Jheel Avenue leading to Coca-cola Chauraha at GT Road and other cross roads. The station catchment area comprises Residential cum Commercial areas of Arya Nagar & Swaroop Nagar in the North, KDA, KMC offices & Hallet hospital in the South.

About Chunniganj:

  • Chunniganj is the first station of the Underground section consisting of a total 8 nos. underground stations namely, Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Phoolbagh, Nayaganj, Kanpur Central, Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar Station. All the stations have been proposed by Cut & Cover station except Nayaganj station which has been proposed by NATM.
  • It is the first underground station in IIT Kanpur to Naubasta direction and is proposed below Chunniganj Bus Terminal at Nawabganj Road and Mall Road intersection. The major roads connecting this station are Nawabganj Road, CN Church Lane and Rahmani Avenue Road.
  • It would be an interchange station, with the passenger interchange with the existing Chunniganj Bus Terminal. The station would serve BNSD & GIC Colleges in the South.

Conclusion:

The placement of girders from Moti Jheel to Chunniganj signifies a crucial development in the Kanpur Metro project, paving the way for rapid progress in this transformative urban mobility initiative.
