Kolkata Metro update: De-launching of abandoned girders going on along Noapara-Bimanbander metro corridor

Metro Railway has been executing the Noapara-Bimanbander Extension Project. For executing this project along this alignment, most of the existing abandoned viaducts of Circular Railway are required to be dismantled.

There are about a 100 girders stretched over the busy Jessore Road and on some parts of VIP Road which have to be removed in order to facilitate construction of the proposed new lines of Metro Railway from Dum Dum Cantonment to Bimanbander via Jessore Road.

  • De-launching of these abandoned girders have been going on during the lockdown period.
  • This work is very crucial considering the heavy traffic movement along the congested arterial road connecting Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.
  • One 600 MT capacity crane has been deployed to remove these abandoned structures along this stretch.
  • On 09.07.2020, one such girder was de-launched successfully.
  • Elaborate arrangements like removing road signal posts, telephone and electric cables, roadside railings etc.
  • In order to protect the road surface, about 300 mm thick layer silver sand has been spread on this road before movement of the crane.
  • Till date, eight such girders on the busy stretch of Jessore Road and VIP Road have been pulled down.
