In a significant step to boost and enhance the northeastern region, Northeast Frontier Railway has commissioned 23.242 km of Pawakhali-Thakurganj section after the statutory inspection done by the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS). This section is an integral part of the Araria – Galgalia railway line project, aimed to strengthen the existing railway network in the chicken neck portion.

The Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) after having completed the statutory inspection of the newly laid railway line of 23.242 km between Pawakhali and Thakurganj stations of the Araria – Galgalia New Line Project has accorded his sanction for commissioning of the section. The entire project comes under Katihar Division of Northeast Frontier Railway.
The Newly constructed broad-gauge line is opened with the primary objective to further strengthen the existing railway network in the chicken neck portion and improve efficiency of the entire railway operation in that portion. This newly laid railway line will be helpful for carrying more freight and passenger traffic through this route towards the Northeast region.
Brief about the Project:
- The Araria – Galgalia New Line Project is of 110.75 Km out of which 23.242 Km rail line is opened from Pawakhali station to Thakurganj station via Kadogaon Halt, Bhogdabar Halt.
- The new railway line will cover the eastern part of Bihar. The project will help in decongestion of sections and hence smooth movement of train services in Pawakhali – Thakurganj section.
- This project has generated a huge number of employment opportunities in the nearby area. It will also help introduce movement of more trains in that area which will boost the Socio-Economic growth of People of the region.
- Economic scenario of the nearby areas will also improve significantly with savings in fuel and reduced cost of transportation apart from reduced time of travel. Transportation of goods will also become cheaper.
Additional Passenger Amenities:
- Adding to passenger amenities, 3-metre-wide new Foot Over Bridges, Waiting Halls and New Passenger Platform Sheds have been constructed at both Pawakhali & Thakurganj and 3 gents & 2 ladies toilets at Pawakhali and 2 gents & 2 ladies toilets at Thakurganj were also constructed.
- Additionally, drinking water facilities for passengers have also been provided at stations. High level platforms are constructed for ease of boarding and deboarding of passengers from trains.
- There are 01 no. important bridges, 08 nos. major bridge & 01 no. major Road Under Bridge and 43 nos. minor bridges in this section.
Conclusion:
The commissioning of Pawakhali and Thakurganj stations of the Araria – Galgalia Line Project serves as a boon for the strategic areas of the northeast region. The development will not only provide strategic connectivity but also give a further thrust to the socio-economic development of the people.
