Chennai Metro Achieves Milestone with Second Tunnel Boring Machine Launch

Chennai Metro marked a significant breakthrough with the launch of the second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) “EAGLE” from Light House Metro Station towards Boat Club Station. This development is part of the Underground Metro Rail section in Corridor-4 of the Phase-2 project.

More Details:

  • Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is presently implementing the construction of the Underground Metro Rail section in Corridor-4 of Phase-2 project from Light House Station at Marina Beach to Kodambakkam Flyover.
  • Earlier, the 1st Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named “Flamingo”, was launched on 1st September 2023, and it is presently tunnelling in the Down Line of Corridor-4 from Light House Station to Boat Club Station.
  • Its counterpart TBM, named “Eagle”, has been successfully launched in the Upline from Light House Station towards Thirumayilai and is expected to arrive at Boat Club Station in October 2026.
  • Mr. R. Ranganathan, GM (Construction), CMRL along with senior officials and staff of M/s AEON Consortium, General Consultants, and CMRL were present during the launch.

Brief About Phase-2:

The Phase-2 expansion is an ambitious endeavour covering a sprawling 118.9 Km network with 128 no. of Stations. It encompasses three Corridors i.e. Corridor -3 From Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 Km), Corridor -4 From Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 Km), Corridor-5- From Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 Km).

The estimated project cost stands at 63246/- Cr (Rupees Sixty three thousand two hundred and forty six only) (including IDC). This proposal is under the process and approval of the Government of India. The project aims for completion by the end of 2026, promising enhanced connectivity and convenience for the residents of Chennai.
