Chennai Metro partners with Johnson Lifts for escalator upgrade, elevating commuter experience

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has recently granted a significant Letter of Acceptance (LoA) to M/s Johnson Lifts Private Limited, for improvement of passenger amenities through escalator work in Phase-1 and its extension.

  • Name of Work: Design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of heavy duty escalator for improvement of passenger amenities for Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-1 and Phase-1 Extension, Corridor 1 and Corridor 2 metro stations.
  • Maintenance Period: 300 Days + DNP (730 Days)
  • Awarded Value: INR 44,96,60,000/-

In March 2023, the CMRL has invited a tender for Tender Number: CMRL/PHASE-I&PHASE-I-EXT/SYS/C1&2-ESC/2023

Scope of Works:

  • Approximately 41 No’s Escalators in stations for vertical movement of passengers.
  • All minor civil works or modifications required for installation of the equipment and restoring to final finishes (chipping, cutting/bending of projected rods/rebars etc).
  • Transportation of equipment and materials for installation purposes.
  • Supply of spare parts, special tools, testing and diagnostic equipment and measuring instruments.
  • Training of Employer’s O&M personnel.
  • Documentation.
  • All Scaffolding, hoisting works required for Escalators Installation.
  • Control and monitoring system for Escalators.
  • Maintenance for specified period.
  • Services.
  • All equipment, fixtures and materials required for interface with designated contractors.
  • All Software and Hardware required for Escalators including development system, licence of all applications and operating system software etc.
  • Storage area for Spares and Records.
  • Enclosures and supporting brackets for housing and fixing equipment.

This Project of Chennai Metro Rail – Corridor 1 & Corridor 2 comprises as follows:

Corridor-1: Meenambakkam to Tondiarpet (14 Nos. Operational Stations – Refer to Appendix D)

Corridor-2: Egmore to St. Thomas Mount (8 Nos. Operational Stations – Refer to Appendix D)

In Corridor-1 & 2 of Chennai Metro rail project, as per the Specification, the works for the quantity of 41 nos. of Semi outdoor Escalators shall be executed. This quantity is as per the preliminary design and may vary during detailed design and project execution.

Future Implications:

This upgrade is anticipated to significantly boost the metro’s operational efficiency and user satisfaction. By improving accessibility within stations, CMRL is set to redefine urban mobility in Chennai. The detailed design and project execution phases may witness adjustments in the specified quantity of escalators, highlighting CMRL’s adaptive approach to infrastructure enhancement.
