Chennai Metro Update: Consortium of Hitachi Rail STS SPA and Hitachi Rail STS India Pvt. Ltd. wins Phase-2 contract worth Rs. 1,620 crore

The “Design, Manufacture, Supply, Installation, Testing & Commissioning of Signalling, Train Control and Video Management System” for the Phase-2 of Chennai Metro Rail Project has been awarded to the consortium of Hitachi Rail STS SPA and Hitachi Rail STS India Pvt. Limited at a cost of INR 1,620 Crore.

  • A tender for the “Design, Manufacture, Supply, Installation, Testing & Commissioning of Signalling, Train Control and Video Management System” with increased safety measures was recently floated by CMRL in order to incorporate the most recent metro rail technology currently being used around the world into the Metro Trainsets currently being purchased for Phase-2.
  • In this regard, the consortium of Hitachi Rail STS SPA and Hitachi Rail STS India Pvt Limited was awarded the bid for “Design, Manufacture, Supply, Installation, Testing & Commissioning of Signalling, Train Control and Video Management System” for the Phase -2 of Chennai Metro Rail Limited at a cost of INR 1,620 Cr.
  • This is the largest signalling tender being executed. This ultra-modern communication-based train control (CBTC) system will allow automatic train operation (ATO) without the need for a driver.
  • This robust system will be certified by an independent safety assessment team for the highest level of safety integrity – 4 as per international standards. This system will be subjected to intensive testing for various safety parameters at the test centre for the safe passenger operation without a driver.
  • On successful clearance the Train Control System will be put into field trial for validation and integration with all other systems. Final implementation and authorization for passenger operation will be authorised by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).
  • The Metro Trains can be operated with a minimum headway of 90 seconds, an improvement over the existing headway. In addition to the automatic operation of the metro train (without operator), the system will integrate the functions of the automatic train movements in the Depot, working of Platform Screen Doors, Functioning of Passenger Information and Display Systems.
  • This system enables real time streaming of video for management, monitoring and control from a centralised Operation Control Centre (OCC).
