CM M. K. Stalin inaugurates pedestrian subway for enhanced connectivity

Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M. K. Stalin, has inaugurated a Pedestrian Subway aimed at providing integrated multi-modal connectivity for passengers. The project, completed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited under the Central Square Project, comes at a cost of Rs. 9.75 Crores.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M. K. Stalin inaugurated through video conference at Secretariat, the pedestrian subway-2 which is located near Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Chennai Medical College and across Evening Bazaar Road and Poonamallee High Road junction which was constructed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited at a cost of Rs. 9.75 crore under the Central Square Project.

Significance of the Project:

  • Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is undertaking the construction of the Central Square Project to transform the Chennai Central area into a world-class landmark.
  • This iconic project aims to provide integrated multi-modal connectivity between Central Railway Station, Suburban Railway terminal, Park Station (suburban), Park Town station (MRTS), Central Metro Station, Ripon Building (Greater Chennai Corporation), Office of the General Manager, Southern Railway and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
  • One part of the Central Square Project, viz. a subway-1 and landscaping works constructed at a cost of Rs. 34.22 crore, were inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister on 30.03. 2022.

Pedestrian Subway under Central Square Project:

  • A new pedestrian subway has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 9.75 crore with funding from Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), near Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Chennai Medical College and across Evening Bazaar Road and Poonamallee High Road junction.
  • This pedestrian subway will be useful for the general public by providing them hassle-free movement across this location thereby protecting them from unsafe pedestrian crossing.
  • There are two escalators in this pedestrian subway – one near Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Chennai Medical College and another near the Bible Society and Office of General Manager, Southern Railway.
  • Anti-skid granite flooring, vitrified wall tiles, Stainless Steel handrails and toughened glass panels have been fixed. Illuminated sign boards have been provided inside the pedestrian subway and also at street level.

Samayamoorthy IAS, Secretary (Housing and Urban Development), Mr. Anshul Mishra IAS, Member Secretary (Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority) and Senior Officials of Government participated in this event.

This inauguration marks a significant step towards improving pedestrian infrastructure and enhancing connectivity for residents and commuters in Chennai.
