Eastern Railway’s Azimganj – Jiaganj (6.90 KM) new railway line project is near completion

Eastern Railway is proud to announce remarkable progress in the (6.90 KM) Azimganj – Jiaganj New Line Project. The project, with a target completion date of February 2024, has seen substantial advancements in various key areas.

In an endeavour to increase mobility and better connectivity between North and Southern part of West Bengal, Azimganj – Jiaganj New Line Project (6.90 KM) is currently in progress.

Eastern Railway’s unwavering dedication to enhancing rail infrastructure remains at the forefront of these initiatives, underscoring its commitment to facilitating seamless travel and transportation for the community.

Works Completed:

  • Earthwork, blanketing, and formation works are o­n track, with 87% completion. The construction of o­ne major bridge in the Azimganj-Jiaganj section has already been completed.
  • Construction of all minor bridges (14 in total) have also been successfully completed. One out of two station buildings have been completed and construction work of another station building is in progress under this project.

Works in Progress:

  • The Electronic Interlocking (EI) building under construction is likely to be completed by the end of this year. Tenders for TRD work were sanctioned early this year. Preliminary work of the same has already been started.

Project in Brief:

Foundation Stone laid for the construction of railway link including bridge between Azimganj and Jiaganj in Murshidabad district at Bhatapara Ghat- Jiaganj.

The project is to cost Rs. 46.7 Crores Jiaganj, an existing railway station of Sealdah Division on Sealdah-Krishnanagar-Lalgola route and Azimganj, an existing railway station of Howrah Division on Howrah-Bandel-Katwa-Azimganj-Malda route of Eastern Railway will provide direct link with Bihar through Sahibganj loop and with North-East to Malda.

This will provide an alternative connection between Howrah and Sealdah. The restoration of this old link will also provide a shorter rail connection with neighbouring Bangladesh via Azimganj Junction-Murshidabad-Ranaghat-Gede-Darshana (in Bangladesh) or Ranghat-Bongaon-Petropole-Benapole (in Bangladesh).
