Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division introduces Ultrasonic Flaw Detection Testing (USFD) to bolster rail infrastructure safety and reliability

Eastern Railway has introduced Ultrasonic Flaw Detection Testing to bolster rail infrastructure safety and reliability.

More Details:

This state-of-the-art technology represents a significant leap forward in the ongoing commitment to ensuring the utmost safety of railway operations within the rail network. The USFD is a sophisticated inspection tool designed to identify and assess flaws and defects in rails, ensuring early detection and preventive maintenance.

The USFD testing is now carried out in Sealdah Division on a regular basis according to the guidelines of USFD manuals and considering the frequency of USFD testing of rails, welds, points crossings, SEJ etc. This USFD machine utilises ultrasonic waves to penetrate the material and provide information about health and condition of the rail.

Key Features of the Ultrasonic Flaw Detection Machine (USFD):

  • High Precision Scanning: The USFD employs advanced ultrasonic technology to scan railway tracks with precision, allowing for the detection of even the smallest flaws that may compromise safety.
  • Real-time Data Analysis: Equipped with data analysis capabilities, the USFD provides real-time feedback to operators, enabling immediate decision-making and intervention if necessary.
  • Enhanced safety: The USFD testing of rail significantly increases safety .Flaws in rails which are not visible by the naked eyes are detected by this technology.
  • Non-Destructive Testing: As a non-destructive testing method, the USFD ensures that inspections can be carried out without causing any harm to the rail infrastructure, minimising downtime and operational disruptions.
  • Adaptability: The USFD is designed to adapt to various track configurations and environmental conditions, making it a versatile solution for the diverse railway network within the Sealdah Division.

At present, 12 nos. Departmental Sr. Section Engineer/Junior Engineer (P.Way) have been deployed in Sealdah Division for USFD testing of Rails, Welds, Points Crossings, SEJ etc. with 12 nos. of Rail testing and 06 nos. weld testing Machines. In addition, 04 nos. outsourcing operators have also been deployed in this division for USFD testing of Rails, Welds.

Sealdah Division has expressed enthusiasm about the deployment of the Ultrasonic Flaw Detection Machine, stating. The introduction of the USFD is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to prioritise safety and reliability in railway operations. This cutting-edge technology aligns with our commitment of adopting the latest advancements to ensure the highest standards of rail infrastructure.

Shri Kausik Mitra, CPRO, Eastern Railway said that USFD testing is helping in better and more accurate detection of any flaw in rail or weld joints.
