Gateway Terminals India pioneers sustainable rail logistics with first Direct Port Delivery movement

Gateway Terminals India (GTI), a collaboration between APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR), has initiated a significant shift towards sustainable rail operations with its inaugural Direct Port Delivery (DPD) rail movement. This landmark development is part of GTI’s ongoing commitment to enhance efficiency and promote environmental sustainability in port operations.

More Details:

APM Terminals Mumbai (Gateway Terminals India – GTI) continues to pursue its strategic ambition of increasing rail movement of containers coming in and out of the terminal, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and efficiency. In line with this vision, GTI achieved a significant milestone by successfully despatching its first rail with DPD containers.

Way Forward towards Sustainability:

  • DPD import containers at GTI are evacuated by road. Converting road movement to rail offers clear benefits to GTI by reducing load on gates (average 3500 containers move across GTI gates) and to customers as rail movement is more cost-effective than road.
  • However, the biggest impact is decarbonization as rail movement offers a sustainable alternative to traditional road transportation, significantly reducing emissions.
  • By leveraging rail infrastructure, GTI aims to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for the logistics industry.

Collaborative Efforts:

  • This milestone was made possible through a collaborative effort of PSA BDP, GTI and CONCOR and the first rakes rolled out on 11th & 12th May, 2024.
  • The inaugural rail movement saw 2 rakes carrying cargo belonging to Sabic Innovative Plastics India Pvt. Ltd. from GTI rail siding at Nhava Sheva to Varnama ICD, Vadodara, and onward to SABIC’s Plant.
