Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi inaugurates various railway projects worth around Rs. 3000 Crores in Tamil Nadu

In a historic moment, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi undertook a comprehensive visit to Trichy and inaugurated five railway projects worth Rs. 3000 Crore in Tamil Nadu. He dedicated various projects which include Salem–Magnesite Jn–Omalur–Mettur Dam & Madurai – Tuticorin Doubling projects.

Shri Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India took a visit to Trichy in Tamil Nadu on 2nd January 2024, and unveiled five railway projects worth Rs. 2917 Crores which are part of Rs. 20,000 Crore multiple projects related to rail, road, Highways, Shipping and Gas sectors benefiting the state of Tamil Nadu.

Among the railway projects, He dedicated two doubling projects for the state of Tamil Nadu.  The Doubling of 41.4 Km Salem–Magnesite Jn–Omalur–Mettur Dam section has been commissioned at a cost of Rs. 448 Crore. This project will significantly ease the movement of coal for Mettur Thermal Power Station, also raw materials and finished products for other industries located in the Mettur region in Tamil Nadu. 

The other doubling project, Rs. 1890 Crore Madurai – Tuticorin Doubling project (160 Km) dedicated by PM. This project will enhance railway line capacity and pave the way for operation of more train services for the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Furthermore, he also dedicated three Electrification projects.  The Electrification projects  of Tiruchchirappalli- Manamadurai- Virudhunagar, Virudhunagar – Tenkasi  Jn, Sengottai – Tenkasi Jn – Tirunelveli- Tiruchendur will immensely benefit the people of Tamil Nadu providing enhanced and swifter connectivity besides contributing to eco-friendly transportation and net zero carbon emissions.

The details of railway and other projects unveiled by Hon’ble Prime Minister:

Salem–Magnesite Jn–Omalur–Mettur Dam Doubling:

  • The Doubling of 41.4 Km Salem–Magnesite Jn–Omalur–Mettur Dam section has been commissioned at a cost of Rs. 448 Crore.
  • The line connects Salem, a major city in Tamil Nadu with Omalur, a town located about 15 km east of Salem and further connects with Mettur, a town situated o­n the banks of the River Cauvery.
  • The section has 5 block stations and 1 halt station, 6 ROBs and 10 RUBs.
  • This project will significantly ease the movement of coal for Mettur Thermal Power Station, also raw materials and finished products for other industries located in the Mettur region in Tamil Nadu.
  • The increased speed of goods trains will improve the turnaround of the rakes and bring about increased revenue to Railways.

Madurai – Tuticorin Doubling:

  • The doubling of Madurai – Tuticorin  (160 Km) was completed at a cost of Rs. 1890 Crore.
  • Madurai – Tuticorin Railway line runs through the districts of Madurai, Virudhunagar and Tuticorin districts of Tamil Nadu and serves as an important transportation link for both passengers and freight.
  • The section has 17 stations including 3 halt stations, 19 major bridges and 197 minor bridges.
  • This project will enhance railway line capacity and pave the way for operation of more train services for the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
  • Paving the way for economic development, the line facilitates the transportation of coal, fertilisers, and other industrial products, to and from the port of Tuticorin, which is o­ne of the major ports o­n the east coast of India.

Railway Electrification projects:

  • The Electrification projects of Tiruchchirappalli- Manamadurai- Virudhunagar (217 kms) completed at a cost of Rs. 221 Crores,
  • Virudhunagar – Tenkasi  Jn (122 Kms) completed at a cost of Rs. 161.13 Crores and
  • Sengottai – Tenkasi Jn – Tirunelveli- Tiruchendur (141 Km) completed at a cost of Rs. 197.38 Crores,
  • All single line sections will immensely benefit the people of Southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
  • These Electrification projects will provide enhanced  connectivity besides contributing to eco-friendly transportation and net zero carbon emissions paving the way for better operational efficiency.

Shri R.N. Ravi. Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, Shri M.K. Stalin, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Hon’ble Union Minister Civil Aviation and Steel,  Dr. L. Thirunavukkarasar, Hon’ble Member of Parliament and other dignitaries also graced the function held in Tiruchchirappalli Airport.
