Insights: PM Modi unveils India’s 1st underwater metro route in Kolkata

In a historic development, PM Modi has inaugurated India’s first underwater metro route in Kolkata. The underwater tunnel being a part of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West Corridor, has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 4,965 crore. This marks a significant milestone in India’s transportation infrastructure.

What makes this metro section special?  

  • Tunnel Length: The tunnel spans a distance of 520 metres under the river, showcasing India’s engineering capabilities in executing complex transportation projects.
  • Urban Mobility Advancement: The construction of the tunnel represents a significant leap forward in urban mobility by offering commuters a faster and more efficient means of transportation.
  • Inauguration Ceremony: During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi took a metro ride from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan, accompanied by school children, to experience the smooth and uninterrupted connection provided by the newly constructed metro route.

  • Deepest Metro Station: Notably, the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section features the deepest metro station in the country, situated 30 metres below ground level at Howrah. This highlights the depth of engineering expertise involved in the project.
  • Efficiency and Speed: The journey through the underwater section of the metro route is expected to take around 45 seconds, emphasising the efficiency and speed of the metro system in connecting key locations.
