Kolkata Metro starts the construction work of underground Victoria Metro Station of Purple Line

Metro Railway (Kolkata) started construction work of Victoria Metro station which will be constructed underground beside the Victoria Memorial Hall, o­ne of the most famous landmarks of the ‘City of Joy’. The station will be o­ne of the four underground stations of Purple Line.

Like all other Metro Projects in the city, Purple Line i.e. Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor has gained momentum in recent times. Joka – Taratala stretch of this corridor was inaugurated o­n 30th December, 2022.

Construction work of Majerhat Metro station has reached its final stage and this station will be commissioned very soon. Construction work of the Majerhat to Esplanade stretch of Purple Line has also got underway.

Victoria Metro station will be constructed underground beside the Victoria Memorial Hall, o­ne of the most famous landmarks of the ‘City of Joy’. Victoria station will be o­ne of the four underground stations of Purple Line.

People from different parts of the city will be able to visit this iconic monument after commissioning of this station very easily. It will also enable the people to visit another two iconic structures i.e. M.P. Birla Planetarium famously known as Taramandal and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The station will be an alternative gateway to Rabindra Sadan, Nandan, Academy of Fine Arts, Nehru Children’s Museum, the famous PG Hospital (IPGMER & SSKM Hospital). People across the city and suburbs will also be able to visit the Brigade Parade Ground famously known as ‘Garer Maath’ and can enjoy the beautiful summer and winter afternoons and evenings.

The Implementing Agency – RVNL:

  • The construction work of Victoria Station has been taken up by the executing agency RVNL recently. RVNL has started to barricade an approximately 5000 sq metre area for construction of this underground station.
  • Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the implementing agency, has set a target to complete the work within 48 months. With the commissioning of Majerhat – Esplanade section, commuting from south-western part of Kolkata i.e. Taratala, Behala, Thakurpukur and Joka areas to Central Kolkata will be smooth and easy.

  • At present RVNL engineers have started the mobilisation work before the construction work starts. 30 weeks will be required for the preparation. This station will be constructed with the help of the Cut and Cover method by M/s Larsen and Toubro Ltd. After completion of barricading work, a diaphragm wall will be erected for Victoria station which will be around 325-metre long.

In order to construct this station, Fountain of Joy at Kolkata Maidan will be dismantled first and reconstructed again after completion of construction work. Several trees will also be transplanted to pave the way for this work.

Vibration Impact Study has been done to assess the vibration levels likely to be generated during the construction and operations of Metro Railway. Based o­n the reports of Vibration Impact Study, No Objection Certificate has been obtained from Victoria Memorial Hall Authority.

Different measures will also be taken to reduce the air and noise pollution, especially at Maidan area during the construction work of this station and also to maintain aesthetic view of Victoria and its surroundings.
