Kolkata Metro Update: Trial runs signal near readiness of new orange line stretch from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata

Trial runs have been successfully conducted on the newly extended stretch of the Orange Line, running from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata. Metro Railway (Kolkata) carried out two round trips to ensure readiness for the upcoming commercial services on this segment.

Kolkata Metro authorities decided to start trial runs o­n the extended stretch of Orange Line from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay station to Beleghata station from 27th April, 2024. The extended stretch of Orange Line from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata is spread over a stretch of 4.39 km with four stations namely VIP Bazar, Ritwik Ghatak, Barun Sengupta and Beleghata in this stretch. On 27th April, o­ne empty rake was utilised to conduct this trial run o­n both UP and Down lines.

Running Commercial Services:

  • At present, commercial services are run between Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay stretch of this Corridor over a stretch of 5.4 km having five stations namely Kavi Subhash, Satyajit Ray, Jyotirindra Nandi, Kavi Sukanta and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay.
  • Commuters can now interchange from Blue Line to Orange Line and vice versa at Kavi Subhash station.

  • With the opening of this 5.4 kms stretch, it was the first time that the two Metro lines (i.e. Blue Line and Orange Line) were linked at Kavi Subhash station.
  • After the commissioning of the much awaited stretch of Kavi Subhash to Airport via Rajarhat Metro project, a very convenient mode of transport for commuters has been opened.
  • People will be able to enjoy a hassle-free journey from Dakshineswar to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay station (Ruby More) just by interchanging at Kavi Subhash station without facing any traffic snarls.
  • For this, an integrated ticketing system was placed for the convenience of the commuters. By virtue of this system commuters won’t have to purchase separate tickets while interchanging at Kavi Subhash station.

  • This trial run o­n the extended stretch of Orange Line will be conducted to check the preparedness to start commercial services from Kavi Subhash to Beleghata stretch of this Corridor.

These trial runs on the extended stretch of the Orange Line are critical for assessing the preparedness for the launch of commercial services from Kavi Subhash to Beleghata. This step is crucial for ensuring a reliable and efficient expansion of Kolkata’s Metro services.
