Mumbai Metro Line-5 Update: MMRDA successfully completes the erection of all precast elements for metro stations

MMRDA Metro team has successfully completed the erection of all precast elements for Metro stations of Metro line 5, phase 1 (Thane-Bhiwandi). The erection of the last platform level L beam at Dhamankar Naka Metro station has marked the completion of the entire erection work for all six stations of this alignment.

More Details:

  • Total 1098 station elements were erected which includes a variety of elements like spines, wings, U girders, pier arms, and L beams etc. Team used cranes ranging from 80 MT to 500 MT capacity and Puller Hydraulic Axle Trailers to complete this activity.

  • This accomplishment was achieved with a strong focus on safety, coordination and supervision of dedicated engineers. With this achievement 73.35%station work of this corridor is completed. As well as 80.5% Viaduct portion of this corridor is now completed.
  • The erection work of 9.87 kms Viaduct elevated stretch out of 11.88Km including 6 stations is now completed by erecting a total 1218 precast elements above piers. This includes Pier Cap, U Girder, I Girder, Box Girder, Parapet Wall etc.

MMRDA overcomes on Several challenges for this accomplishment:

  • MMRDA faced several challenges that required innovative solutions. Team was facing issues for safe crane manoeuvring at Dhamankar Naka Metro Stations L beam Erection activity, for which R&R was mandatory.
  • MMRDA has carried out a demolition drive at Dhamankar Naka station on LHS & RHS in two phases and carried out these activities successfully. Project affected people from this activity were compensated as per MUTP policy in stipulated time.

  • At Kasheli Station, Metro Team used a higher capacity crane to erect a pier arm. Due to less ROW (right of way)at Kasheli, Kalher, and Anjurphata stations, MMRDA demolished private boundary walls to facilitate precast elements erection.
  • After completion, the boundary walls were reinstated. Also the Metro work faced issues in Erection along HT line and heavy traffic at various locations too.
  • These challenges required careful planning and coordination to ensure the smooth execution of the project. The MMRDA’s ability to overcome these obstacles showcases their determination and adaptability in achieving goals.

  • Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) is a 24.9 kms elevated corridor from Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan of Mumbai Metro Rail project. However, MMRDA is constructing phase-1 of this alignment which is between Thane to Bhiwandi of length 11.88 Km.
  • Metro Line-5, Phase-I starts at Kapurbawdi in Thane and runs from Southwest to Northeast direction, and it ends at Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi. The 6 stations of Metro Line-5  (Phase-1) namely Balkum Naka, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka.
  • Metro line 5 corridor is unique amongst other corridors as it having viaduct on 550 m along Kasheli creek portion and running within the Rural area of Bhiwandi Taluka, from Kasheli to Anjurphata.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan, Commissioner, MMRDA, said “Mumbai Metro Line 5 Phase 1 has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing the erection of all station precast elements. This accomplishment brings the metro line one step closer to project delivery.
