Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) starts tunnelling works for Mumbai Metro Line-7A project

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is excited to announce significant progress in the implementation of Metro Line 7A, a project that will greatly enhance Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure and connectivity. This extension of the Red Line ML7 is set to revolutionise the way Mumbaikars travel.

More Details:

Commencement of Tunneling for Metro Line 7A:

  • The first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) – T62 – commenced operations on September 1, 2023, marking the beginning of the tunnelling phase for the ML7A project. The Initial drive is expected to be completed within a month, followed by the final drive.
  • The entire tunnelling project is slated for completion by May 2024. The tunnelling process involves depths ranging from 28mto 12m from ground level, ensuring a seamless transition from the underground Metro line to the elevated Metro line.
  • Notably, the MMRDA successfully diverted an underground sewer line that was infringing on the tunnel alignment of ML7A, using the Micro tunnelling method and commissioning it on January 30, 2023.

Metro Line 7A Connects Key Destinations with Ease:

  • The Metro Line 7A project promises to have a transformative impact on Mumbai’s transportation landscape. Spanning a total length of 3.422 km, with a twin tunnel stretch of 2.49 km, Metro Line 7A extends from Andheri (East) to CSMI Airport, further expanding the operational Red Line ML7 (Andheri (E) to Dahisar (E)).
  • The alignment of Metro Line 7A runs partially elevated and parallel to WEH & Sahar elevated road, with an elevated Airport Colony Metro Station along AAI colony. This new line seamlessly connects to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), providing direct connectivity not only to the airport but also to the Mira Bhayandar (ML9) area and the Western suburbs (ML2A and ML7).
  • Passengers will benefit from convenient transfers between ML3 and the International Airport at the CSMIA underground station of ML3, significantly reducing travel times to the airport by 30-60 minutes.
  • Looking ahead, Metro Line 7A will also play a critical role in connecting to the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport through the planned ML8, further enhancing the city’s connectivity.
  • The CSMIA underground station of ML7A and the CSMIA underground station of ML3 are parallel and connected at the concourse level, providing seamless connectivity between paid-to-paid and unpaid-to-unpaid areas.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, emphasised in a statement, “The Metro Line 7A project brings substantial economic and environmental benefits to Mumbai. These include a significant reduction in traffic congestion, the provision of safe and efficient transportation, increased employment opportunities, decreased fuel consumption, improved air quality, and a noteworthy reduction in CO2 emissions. The ML7A project is a testament to MMRDA’s commitment to creating a more connected, efficient, and sustainable Mumbai. It represents a giant leap forward in the city’s journey towards a brighter and more accessible future.”
