New Materials Business (NMB) is one of the youngest businesses of Tata Steel and was set up in response to the growing demands for alternative materials. NMB started in the year FY’18 and has now completed 5 years of operation. NMB has three materials verticals: Composites, Graphene and Medical Material & Devices. These are positioned as new-age alternative materials with unique benefits making them viable and efficient for an increasing number of applications.

Value Addition Of Tata Steel (Nmb) In Railway Sector:

Indian Railway has opted for Fiber Reinforced Composites (FRP) as a material for railway-coach interiors for light-weighting of the coaches. Tata Steel Limited (NMB) has extended composite solution for Railway coach interior to Indian Railways. FRP is being used for the interior of AC coaches, which includes interior side panels, floor, roof sheet, windows, seats and berths, AC trough, sandwich panel partitions, lavatories etc.

Vande Bharat (Semi High Speed Train Of India):

The Vande Bharat Express is a self propelled Indian semi-high-speed. It is running as an inter city express. It is indigenously designed and manufactured under the “Make in India” programme of Government of India. Vande Bharat Express is designed to be capable of running at a maximum speed of 160 kmph that can be touched in only 140 seconds for commercial purpose and it exceeded 180kmph during testing.

As part of Tata Steel’s continuous endeavor to achieve excellence and bring high end products to its customers, Tata steel Limited (NMB) has created a milestone by bagging a bulk order for supplying and installation of complete seating systems for 22 rakes (352 coaches) of the Vande Bharat express. This is ‘first-in-India’ kind of a supply which will be executed over 12 months starting September 2022

The seats will have higher corrosion resistance and lower maintenance cost. Moreover, it will be conforming to European standard of fire-retardant property and will offer improved safety and comfort to passengers including 180⁰ rotation. Tata steel (NMB) has also come up to Indian Railway with complete solution of interior composite panels, which is durable, washable, non-corrosive. The panels are conforming to European safety norms and anti-graffiti standards.
