In a first-of-its kind initiative over Indian Railways, Parcel Scanners have been commissioned at Hyderabad Station to strengthen security of Parcels transported by railways.

- To ensure utmost security of rail transportation and to provide safe and secure rail travel, South Central Railway has introduced scanning facility of Parcel consignments offered for transportation through Rail.
- In this regard, the first Parcel Scanner has been installed at Hyderabad Station Parcel Office. This is yet another first of its kind initiative over Indian Railways started by Secunderabad Division of SCR.
- Parcel consignments are generally transported either through the dedicated Parcel Vans or Luggage Rooms located adjacent to Guard’s Brake van of passenger train services. In the recent past Railways has taken several proactive steps to attract parcel traffic to railways, which has led to drastic improvement in Parcel traffic in general and SCR in particular.
- In this regard, to make the transportation of parcels safe and secure by Railways for both the passengers and customers, Secunderabad Division has taken an important step by commissioning Parcel scanners at Parcel Office of Hyderabad Station.
- The scanners have been commissioned under the New, Innovative Non Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (NINFRIS) of Indian Railways. As part of the first time initiative, the Parcel Scanners have been installed with no cost to the railways.
- All the packages booked for transportation from the station have to be compulsorily scanned for ensuring safety of both the consignment and also the passengers, once scanning is complete, Stickers/Stamps will be affixed as a mark of scanning.
- A nominal fee is collected at the rate of Rs.10 per package for the parcels booked in non-leased parcel vans and Rs.5 per package for parcels in leased vans.
Shri Arun Kumar Jain, General Manager (Incharge), SCR, has complimented Shri Abhay Kumar Gupta, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad Division and his team along with HeadQuarters Officials for introducing novel initiative. He stated that SCR is always committed to the security and safety through rail transportation and this type of initiatives are very much needed in the current times. He also added that feasibility of extending this type of security measures to other major parcel offices will be looked into in the coming days.
