SWR carries out track renewal works to increase speed of trains over its jurisdiction

South Western Railway (SWR) is taking up works for increasing the speed in its sections by carrying out track renewal works which enable trains to run at a speed of 110 Kmph. All requirements for faster trains like increase in super-elevation at curves, correction of transition length, through tamping, attending points and crossings with track machine named UNIMAT have been completed. Recouping of Ballast to maintain cushion, recouping missing permanent way fittings are also being done to facilitate faster trains.

  • After completing speed trial and complying observations of Commissioner of Railway Safety, Bengaluru Division of SWR is ready to run trains up to 110 Kmph o­n section between Yelahanka – Chikballapur section (46.05 KMs).  
  • This section was opened in 1996 at 50 kmph and was cleared for 75 kmph in 2007.
  • After a gap of 13 years the section is upgraded to run trains from 100 kmph to 110 Kmph.

With this work the following sections of SWR are capable of running trains at 110 Kmph.

  • Baiyappanahalli – Dharmavaram (177 Kms)
  • Penukonda – Sri Sathya Sai Prashanthi Nilayam- Dharmavaram (53 Kms)
  • KSR Bengaluru –  Jolarpettai (Double Line) (281 Kms)
  • Yesvantpur – Tumkur (Double Line) (128 Kms)
  • Birur – Chikjajur (68 Kms)

Recently, Commissioner of Railway Safety had permitted running of trains at 110 Kmph in the following sections SWR.

  • Londa to Miraj (186 Km)
  • Sanvordem – Vasco (19 Kms)

The work of increasing speed over the zone is being taken up at the divisional level under the direction of Shri Vipul Kumar, PCE/SWR.  Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, GM/SWR has informed that the zone is focusing o­n eliminating speed restrictions to minimum to improve speed of trains.

Recent Achievement:

On 07.11.2020, Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager, South Western Railway (SWR) with Divisional Railway Manager Hubballi and Principal Heads of the Departments of South Western Railway inspected the progress of o­ngoing works being undertaken in the section between Hotgi and Gadag.

  • Work of doubling with electrification between Hotgi and Gadag is in progress.
  • After the inspection Shri Singh expressed satisfaction at the pace of work and issued instructions to complete them within targeted dates of completion.
  • He asked concerned officials to raise sectional running speed as important maintenance works have been completed recently. 
  • During the inspection a speed trial up to 110 Km was done between Badami to Gadag.
  • During the inspection Indi Road, Vijayapura, Almatti, Badami, Bagalkot stations were inspected.  Staff quarters at Indi Road were inspected.  
  • Kudgi Canal crossing and proposed location of Aliabad where Vijayapura goods shed is planned to be shifted was inspected. 
  • During the inspection Shri P. C. Gaddigoudar, Hon’ble MP/Bagalkot and Shri Veeranna Charantimath, Hon’ble MLA/Bagalkot met GM/SWR and requested for works to be taken up o­n priority at Bagalkot.  
  • They requested for commencing work of new station building at Bagalkot with modern amenities. 
  • They also asked to start processing for construction of ROBs at Badami and Guledgudda for which works are sanctioned.  
  • GM assured that all infrastructure and passenger amenity works will be completed along with the doubling and electrification works between Hotgi and Gadag.
