Metro rail systems witnessed the fast growth, from network length of 222km in 3 cities in 2011 to 697km in 13 cities by 2021. Approved additional metro rail network of 1,032km will expand the reach of metro systems up to 27 cities. In addition, lighter urban rail systems such as Metrolite and Metro Neo are being conceptualised and developed by many small- and medium-sized cities. The approved metro rail projects have a projected expenditure of INR 3 trillion ($40.4bn, €31.2bn) over the next five years.
Delhi Metro, the lifeline of National Capital Region of Delhi marked 25 years of its foundation in the year 2019. It became a pioneer in India in automated metros with opening of its fully automated line Magenta Line in December 2020 followed by Pink Line in November 2021.

UITP India, supported by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is organising its flagship annual event ‘UITP India Urban Rail Seminar 2022’ on 09-10 March 2022. The event will witness representation from all metros in India, metro operators, financing institutions ministries involved in the Urban Rail landscape of India, and other industry players.
The seminar will also encompass key national and international speakers sharing their knowledge and experiences on various topics of covid-19 impact on the Urban Rail sector and financial concerns, technological innovations in the Urban Rail Sector, funding and financial innovation in the Urban Rail sector, and Operation and maintenance in Urban Rail.
