Kolkata Metro sets new records in Non-Fare revenue and passenger ridership for FY 2023-24

In yet another remarkable achievement, Metro Railway has delivered outstanding results in generating substantial Non Fare Revenue (NFR) during the recently concluded 2023-24 financial year. Moreover, with a passenger count of 19.25 crores, the Metro Railway has witnessed an impressive increase of 8.82% compared to the previous fiscal year’s figure of 17.69 crores.

More Details:

From 1st April, 2023 to 31st March, 2024, NFR earnings of Kolkata Metro have stood at Rs. 43.56 crores, surpassing 2022-23’s figure of Rs. 36.33 crores. In March 2024 itself Metro earned Rs 3.44 crores as NFR. Following the guidelines of Railway Board, Metro Railway, in spite of being o­ne of the smallest zones of Indian Railways, has been able to show remarkable results in its effort to increase Non-Fare Revenue earnings in the just concluded fiscal. With such improved figures, Kolkata Metro has again registered itself as o­ne of the major Railway zones to achieve this result.

Initiatives to Increase NFR:

  • Kolkata Metro, being o­ne of the smallest zones of Indian Railways, mainly depends o­n passenger earnings. In order to increase its revenue, innovative approaches and meticulous planning have been adopted for improving NFR earnings substantially.
  • By virtue of such endeavour, corporate houses could be roped in branding Kolkata Metro premises and putting up displays, stalls, kiosks, digital initiatives in Metro Railway.
  • Such concerted efforts of Metro authorities combined with co-operation of Corporate Houses have resulted in ensuring such remarkable performance.

Future Aspects:

With new Metro Corridors getting opened and more such innovative plans being conceptualised, it is expected that in the present financial year i.e.2024-25 too, Metro will be able to surpass all expectations and end the year with flying colours. More Corporate bigwigs have also expressed their keenness to work with Metro Railway for achieving a greater height.

Passengers Ridership:

At present, Metro services are available o­n Blue Line, Green Line, Purple Line and Orange Line. Out of these, Blue Line of Kolkata Metro has carried 17.94 crores passengers in the recently concluded fiscal i.e. 2023-24. Maximum passenger count, 1.96 crores has been registered at Dum Dum station followed by Esplanade station (1.32 crores) and Rabindra Sadan station (1.24 crores).

  • On the other hand, Green Line carried 1.22 crores passengers in 2023-24. Out of this, maximum passenger count (49.78 lakhs) was recorded at Sealdah station.
  • Second highest passenger count (21.56 lakhs) was recorded at Salt Lake Sector V station followed by 12.08 lakh passenger count at Karunamoyee station.
  • Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line has carried 1.34 lakh passengers in the last fiscal. As Metro Railway has started to ply under the river Hooghly and new Corridors are expected to be operational in the new fiscal, it is expected that passenger count of Metro Railway will further increase in this financial year.

Shri P. Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, Metro Railway has expressed his satisfaction as Metro has been able to show such a performance. He has expressed his hope that in this fiscal too Metro will be able to fulfil the expectations of Railway Board.
