Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) on 05th June, 2022 observed World Environment Day 2022 with a theme ‘Ónly One Earth’ with focus on living sustainably in harmony with nature. The campaign #OnlyOneEarth calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.

- UPMRC also celebrated this occasion by planting saplings by Shri Kumar Keshav, MD, UPMRC in Metro Depot premises in the presence of other senior officials to spread awareness towards conservation and preservation of the environment among the people.
- Every year UPMRC conducts a plantation drive to raise awareness among the people by planting saplings with the motto of ‘Environment Conservation & Protection’. The other senior officials also contributed towards this noble cause of clean and green environment by taking part in this plantation drive in Metro Depot.
- UPMRC has been instrumental in bringing down the emission levels by providing green mobility solutions in the form of Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to the people of Lucknow. UPMRC also supports this year’s theme to strive for a better life on the earth and make it even a better place to live in.
- As a precursor to tree plantation drive at Transport Nagar Depot and to spread awareness pertaining to ‘Environment Conservation’; a Walkathon was organised from KD Babu Singh Stadium to Hazratganj Metro Station. Shri Brajesh Pathak, Deputy CM, Uttar Pradesh, and Shri Kumar Keshav, MD UPMRC were the chief guests of the event. They flagged off the Walkathon in which 1000 participants marked their presence.
Speaking on this occasion, Shri. Kumar Keshav, MD, UPMRC said, “World Environment Day is very significant for all of us which reminds us about the importance of environment protection to make life accessible for every living being on the planet. It also draws our attention to make a contribution as responsible citizens/individuals for sustainable development and environment protection. UPMRC has undertaken several initiatives to make the environment clean and green while providing a safe, convenient and affordable travel experience to the commuters.”

UPMRC’S Green Initiatives:
- Harnessing Solar Energy: A 1.28 MW capacity solar plant has been installed at the Administrative Building premises along with 1.1 MW capacity solar plant at Transport Nagar Metro Depot. It has generated 30 lakhs units of electricity till date and has resulted in lower carbon footprint.
- Regenerative energy in trains & lifts: Rolling Stock of Lucknow Metro has efficiency of 40% due to regenerative braking technology. The lifts of Lucknow Metro also regenerate 37% of energy consumed.
- Rain water harvesting: In a 23 km long stretch of North-South more than 300 rain water harvesting pits have been created with a capacity to harvest 20 lakhs litres of water.
- Water efficient fixtures: UPMRC has installed efficient fixtures at Lucknow Metro stations to save lakhs of water.
- Wastewater treatment: To minimise water wastage sewage treatment plants have been installed at various metro stations and metro depots. The waste water is being recycled for horticulture purposes. The metro depot is also functioning as ‘Zero Discharge Facility’.
- Green median along North-South corridor: A green median has been developed with green plantation along the corridor to minimise the effects of vehicular pollution.
