New line commissioned between Bapatla – Tsunduru, enhancing regional rail connectivity

In a significant step toward enhancing rail connectivity, the South Central Railway has successfully commissioned a new 32 km third line between Bapatla and Tsunduru with electrification. This critical segment is part of the extensive Vijayawada – Gudur tripling and electrification project. The completion of this line means a continuous 106 km stretch from Tsunduru to Surareddipalem is now fully operational with a third rail and electrification.

More Details:

South Central Railway is giving a major focus towards creation of infrastructure in terms of additions to its rail network for enhancing its rail handling capacity. Accordingly, o­ne more section between Bapatla – Tsunduru for a distance of 32 Kms has been successfully completed and commissioned.

This section is part of Vijayawada – Gudur Tripling & electrification project, o­ne of the o­ngoing major projects in the state of Andhra Pradesh and this stretch of railway line falls under Bapatla District. With the tripling of this stretch, now, a continuous stretch of 106 Kms between Surareddipalem – Tsunduru will have a third line facility along with electrification.

Significance of the Project:

  • Situated in the Grand Trunk route along the Coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, the section between Vijayawada – Gudur on SCR plays a vital role in connecting the Northern and Eastern parts of the country with the Southern states.
  • This route has become highly congested with the steady increase in both Passenger and Freight trains.
  • To decongest this crucial section, the Vijayawada – Gudur Third line project was sanctioned in the year 2015-16 for a distance of 288 Kms at an approximate cost of Rs. 3246 crores. The work is being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.

Work completed till date:

  • Works have been taken up simultaneously in all the stretches. So far, the sections between Gudur – Singarayakonda for a distance of 127 Kms and the stretch between Bapatla -Surareddipalem for a distance of 74 kms have been completed and commissioned successfully. Now, with the completion of the 32 Kms section between Bapatla – Tsunduru, the total of 233 Kms of the total section stands electrified along with the third line.
