Product Expertise: Plug-in Connectors – Demanding Requirements for the railway industry

Train breakdowns are not only a problem for travelers, but also cause high costs for rail companies. Reliable plug-in connectors are therefore absolutely needed on the track. However, they must be able to fulfil the high standards for safe use in rail vehicles. Plug-in connectors of all shapes and sizes have been used in rolling stock for decades. Heavy-duty industrial plug-in connectors and M12 circular plug connectors are particularly popular in this industry. The connectors are deployed for many different applications; data transmission and sensor/actuator cabling make use of both custom-assembled M12 plug-in connectors as well as molded cables. System cables for network systems such as Profinet and fieldbuses such as CANopen or MVB (Multifunction Vehicle Bus) are thus deployed just as readily as are cables for connecting sensors and actuators.

Heavy-duty industrial plug-in connectors and their matching contact inserts are used both outside and inside rail vehicles for many different purposes. The heavy-duty industrial housings that are found on and in rail vehicles serve to transmit both power and data. Inside the rail vehicles, contact inserts are frequently installed directly on mounting frames with no need for additional housings.

Compatible plugging – flexible combination Heavycon Complete heavy-duty plug-in connectors

The heavy-duty plug-in connectors of the Heavycon family deliver the ideal connection technology for any data, signal, or power transmission requirement. The various plug-in connector series can be flexibly combined with each other:

Heavycon Standard

  • This broad range of robust metal housings offers different
cable outlet orientations and locking mechanisms in
    addition to:
  • High corrosion resistance
  • Flexible longitudinal and transverse bracket locking mechanism
  • Suitable for installation and plugging

Heavycon Evo

The flexible tiltable bayonet locking mechanism of the Evo range allows users to adjust the cable outlet orientation as needed during installation. Additional benefits:

  • Low storage and logistics costs
  • Flexible longitudinal and transverse bracket locking mechanism
  • Suitable for installation and plugging

Heavycon Advance

The rugged Advance housings with direct screw locking and no panel mounting base are built for maximum service life. Additional benefits:

  • Ideal application with demanding environmental condition thanks to high protection class
  • Low cost due to direct assembly
  • Suitable for installation

Heavycon Contact Inserts

Push-in technology in Heavy-duty connectors, now firmly established on the market, is also used to connect the power signal. This means there is a module with plug-in connection technology available for the industrial plug connectors from the Heavycon Modular line as well. The individual wires are fitted with ferrules; the prepared wire is pushed into the contact chamber, and the contact is established.

The connection is vibration-resistant, long-lasting, and can be used for applications up to 400 V and 16 A. There are also various power modules available for voltages of up to 5,000 V and currents of up to 200 A.

Tendency towards higher data rates and X-coded M12

The railway industry has joined the trend towards 10-Gigabit Ethernet for data cabling. X-coded M12 plug-in connectors are particularly suitable in this context due to their ruggedness as well as their shock and vibration resistance. The increasingly sophisticated system requirements for on-board infotainment are also shifting train manufacturers to embrace 10-Gigabit Ethernet. More and more device suppliers are beginning to fit their products with X-coded M12 interfaces. New switches designed for railway systems, for example, already feature X-coded M12.

M12 Push-in technology offers even more convenience

The deciding factor for the selection of the correct plug-in connector is its specific functions, with which the user should be intimately familiar. The spring and insulation displacement technologies, both of which are considered quick-connection technologies, save the installation technician a great deal of time.
